Well you check the e-mail header and trace that, though the likelihood is that will take you back to the server it originated but not directly to the person.

I've done a few previous traces and you get about as far as a corporate firewall without needing to do anything incriminating.

The main way people usually get info from a person e-mail address is through sending them a HTML file or image that is served from a server that they log the IP on.

So the intended recipient opens up their e-mail and downloads the image or clicks and anchor to a URL they capture the IP.

It's now increasingly easy to do this without being suspected of targetting someone because of the mountains of spam. (It will also explain why people sometimes get spam that appears to sell something, but doesn't give you and sales details.)

it's totally dependant on why you are tracing the person, if they are spamming then you only need to identify the servers used to get it stopped (e-mail those servers at their Abuse@ e-mail address.)

If they are sending death threats to you, supposedly some countries will not only "not" take this as a joke, but they will in fact inprison people for "intent".

    Hope that aids.

As StryderUnknown has already said, it may be impossible. However, look at this article . It explains how you should read the headers of an e-mail message. The headers show the exact route the message took to get to you.

If you use mozilla, use CTRL+U to view the raw message source. If you use outlook express, select "File -> Properties", then switch to the detail tab, and finally click on the button "Message Source".
