Has anyone seen this movie? I want to rent it when it comes out but my wife thinks it's going to be just another of those "sappy" flicks I'm always making her sit through.

It appears to have won universal praise. The critics love it, people refer to it in glowing terms, even advice columnists urge their supplicants to watch it therapeutically.

I must say, when something becomes this well-liked, the iconoclast in me starts to be skeptical. Is it really that good, or just politically correct?

Don't know Mr. Fraggle but I always trust Rotten Tomatoes on these things. Lots of info on it there, as per usual. Looks like one to watch:

Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 92% (Fresh: 154. Rotten: 13. Total: 167).

When www.imdb.com rates a movie at 8.0 or higher, it's very rare that it's a shitty movie. This movie is rated at 8.1. Probably worth seeing. And since it's a comedy starring Steven Carell, doubly so!

I think you'll find Little Miss Sunshine to be somewhat sappy, but mostly ironic and funny. The movie is largely about how empty this "Little Miss Sunshine" contest is, and then, how it only fills the people surrounding it with superficiality. Dont let the title fool you, it's kind of made as a jab toward the contest, conscious of how stupid the phrase "Little Miss Sunshine" sounds. It might be possible to find the movie a bit cliche, but I think it's pretty novel, and definitely worth renting.

And since it's a comedy starring Steven Carell, doubly so!I rather enjoyed Steven Carell on The Daily Show but I have not been impressed with him since. My wife and I both thought "The Forty Year Old Virgin" was one of the most pointless and offensive movies of the past twenty years. She gave up on it after fifteen minutes and I gave it fifteen more.

My idea of good comedy is "Bedazzled" (the original), "A Fish Called Wanda," or "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels." But I love the little offbeat films like "Rustler's Rhapsody," "Saving Grace," and "Paulie."

I thought it was cute and funny. The woman star is GREAT. The humor is subtle. I might not have enjoyed it as much if I weren't at the theater. I'm not good at spotting subtle humor all the time without help.
A very odd UNpc mix of people traveling cross country in a hippie van all for a Jon Benet type child fashion show. I loved it.
7 out of 10 Stars.

I thought it was great.
The humor was a little darker, a little more subtle than your typical family comedy.

[edit]
It's not an actual 'family comedy' but a comedy about family.

I liked him in Anchor Man, playing as the character, Brick. Something about that guy's expressions I just find appallingly hilarious. I guess it's because his normal look makes him appear like he could be a scary dude. It's not really the things he says either that make him funny, but the delivery.

This is a good example of Carell.
