Hi, I'm new to the forum.

Can someone give me any info regarding these 2 programs?

I did a search on downloading music and LimeWire came up. How is this and how does file sharing work? Do I have to alter anything in system preferences?

I currently have Norton's Firewall but it's OS9. I have it running in classic on osX but after doing tests on Sygate Online Services and Shields Up!, the responses I was getting were either "blocked" or "closed". I did a search to see what else is available and found NetBarrier X. I installed the free basic version (try-out) and re-did the tests. They both came back "stealth". Anyone have NetBarrier X or have had any experience with it. Or maybe someone have other recommendations.

I'm not only a Mac newbie but a newbie when the internet is involved. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

filesharing? er. you tell program what files you offer for trade. you conenct to a network of other sharers. you take from them and your software will give to them. weak concept of give and take. robs music/games/apps/etc industry of millions a year. can get you busted. anything else?

    blocked, closed and stealthed:
ways of responding or not to tcp connection requests
blocked/closed: reply with "port is closed" (deny)
stealth: "do not reply at all" (drop)

all are refusals, stealth means an attacker cant even tell reliably that your computer is even there.
note that firewalls are largely media driven bullshitware. there are reasonable measures you can take to protect your computer and never need a firewall or virus scanner. firewalls, i feel, breed a false sense of security, and are often misconfigured and misunderstood and offer little or no protection at all. regardless of what hype driven webshites like www.grc.com (related to zonealarm and shieldsup) purport. ya only gotta look at the guys writing style to see he is a moron(!!!!!!!!!)

uninstall the firewall, and dont open any email attachment that is not a picture, or text file. better still, use hotmail or some other service that virus scans all attachments
