    Ponder here.

Women, beautiful creatures sometimes (but luckily not always) out of our grasp. They are really all that matters for a male in life, at least from the evolutionary stance.

The Universe. One speck of it the size of a grain of sand contains billions of galaxies, with billions of stars in each galaxy, and planets, maybe a tenth of which with some form of life, a hundredth with intelligence.

Everything. Unless we make an impression we will be forgotten, unknown people in a world filled to the brim with others just like us. Will we stand out? Who knows if someone here, anyone, is the next Kennedy, the next Mozart, or the next Hitler.

The conclusion of this is that what really matters, or what we always want, is just out of our grasp for one reason or another (it makes sense, because if we do not have what we want we want it. That, my friends, is the driving force of the human race.). Will we ever have everything? Ultimate technology? Unconditional love everywhere? I think that if that ever happens we will die out, for a lack of things to live for. Want is what we thrive upon, a paycheck, the girl down town, that bright star (Pollux is it's name, I think) that has a complicated wobble to it. There is so much we don't know. There is so much we will know. Knowledge is power. Lack of it is want.

Ah, thank you, you've been wonderful. It's now someone elses turn to take the stick of philosophy.

    And hit people with it!

    *Whap!*

Life has no reason to exist, in the cosmological. The universe could as easily be lifeless. In the biological sense, life exists to make more life. But most humans need more meaning than this - purposless, meaninglessness, frightens them. So man invented religion, and philosophy, and started wondering what the purpose of life is.

Miyamoto Musashi thought that the best way to live was 'to do nothing I would later regret'. But this is impossible, is it not? I doubt that the man died without regrets.

Carl Sagan once said that "We are the Universe trying to understand itself". And he was right, but following the thought can lead to a mysticism that is not there. We are part of the universe, and we do try to understand the universe and ourself, but this is what it is, nothing more.

We try to understand the universe, then, and can never really completly comprehend it. What we think is true might be false, and there is no such thing as absolute certainty.

Is this meaningless? Yes and no. We (those who follow this philosophy) live for no great cosmic purpose, but for humbler reasons.

We live to experiance, to journey. We enjoy our lives, we suffer, we fight. Camus explains:

"I leave Sisyphus at the foot of the mountain! One always finds one’s burden again. But Sisyphus teaches the higher fidelity that negates the gods and raises rocks. He, too, concludes that all is well. This universe henceforth without a master seems to him neither sterile nor futile. Each atom of that stone, each mineral flake of that night-filled mountain, in itself forms a world. The struggle towards the heights is enough to fill a man’s heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy"

So Musashi had it right -somwhat. We will do things that we will regret, but the important thing is to try to avoid doing them. We try to live ethically, with no hope of being perfect.

And yes, this is meaningless. Therein lies the joy.

    Xev,

That was nice and kinda heavy for you but nice anyway.

But really the ultimate mystery of the universe is here on Earth and man has spent thousands of years struggling to comprehend this massive enigma, and still there is no sign of hope that he will ever solve the challenge.

The mystery of course is - Woman.

    Have fun.

Cris: You do me too much honor. Heavy? My thoughts are so disorganized and unproven that I don't talk about them much.

I prefer to be Sisyphus, forever asking....rather than one of the thousands of gurus who claim supreme knowledge.

Dear lord, that is heavy too. I've had too much sleep, that's what it is! 14 hours of sleep! And I spent the day reading pulp 'courtroom' novels! And eating sushi! And Lexx is on!

    That's better.

Would be better put as 'wuh-mun'. WUH-MUN!

    Xev,

If we each understood each other then there would be no curiosity or challenge. The fun would be missing.

No woman has yet been able to understand me, or so I have been told. And I gave up dating a few years ago to purposely avoid the confusion for a while and give myself a rest.

Perhaps one day I'll have another go.

    The Mystery is.....

Who did kill Mr. Black... Was it Colonel mustard with a Candlestick in the hallway, or Miss Scarlet with the dagger in the Study???

    Oops... sorry...

The Mystery is... All this energy in the universe and who has to fork out for the power bill?

I think the women should work to pay for it. Isn't it time they started supporting us for a change?

No no no! The government should! We need to be babied as citizens!

Possibly. You already exude 'he just needs one special woman' vibes.

Dear sweet christ, I don't understand women either.

I give up! I'm off to join the bonobos!

Oh crap, I'm human. I WANNA BE A BONOBO! WAAAAAA!

Ah, I'm glad to see this thread has taken off. Rest assured that when I'm in a more philosophical mood I'll continue on it.

The universe might as well not exist if there's nothing inside it to experience it.

    Branching off original post:

I think that's why we all have to want something we can get.

"Hobbes if you could have anything in the world right now what would you wish for?"

    "A sandwhich."

"What no Million dollars, your own planet, immortality! Jeesh that's dumb"

"Munch, Munch, Munch - Hey my wish came true."

-Slightly incorrectly quoted Calvin and Hobbes - Bill Waterson

P.S. Either that or the true meaning to life is those insane shirts Pollux wears - Hawaiinarific I tell you

zpollux don't go off acting like your Rushkoff or something, I know your no Choatician. I also know a lot could be argued from the existance of those shirts and you wearing them. Could also help prove how women are so out of your grasp

Are you referring to life? Or 'human' life?

The universe as a whole experienced by any living creature. It might as well not be there if nothing or no one could see it. Right?
