Just a thought while I was considering the " Let's lower the minimum post count before allowing links" thread.
On one particular Photography site I'm a member of, one has to 'earn' sufficient points to be allowed to upload photos by critiquing the photos of others.
This kind of system promotes interaction, and would certainly curtail those 'I'll start a thread just to post a link' annoyances.
...just an idea....

I think it would discourage genuine posters who want to sign up to ask a specific question.

James R, do you imply that the current looks of the forum is insufficient for that goal?

I disagree.
I know for myself, way back in time, upon first joining I spent most of my time simply reading threads. Eventually I became familiar enough with the overall level of discussion to feel that I could contribute.
In any case, I was simply thinking of something along the lines of 10 or 20 replies.
In my opinion, threads are too often started on a whim.
What's more, I don't think the 'point' of SciForums is to be a venue where people can show up and simply 'ask a question'.

if you remember the infraction system we had then you'll know alot of these people wouldn't take a massive coronary seriously.
the infraction system would work only if it was a select few that wielded the power.
isn't that what mods are? a select few that wield the power?
the system we have is fine.

Your point being?
I never made a claim about the infraction system, though I would now have to say that it's a silly idea, placing too much work on the shoulders of the Mods. What's more, it's a negative system, based upon punitive measures. Whereas my suggestion was reward-based.

the system we have is fine.
In your opinion.

well, you asked about a system where the posters award points for posts.
i pointed out a few things about the infraction system we had that would contradict your system.
i don't know, it might work, only the mods can really answer your question.

Nope.
I was making an analogy.
