I purchased a violin a little while back, and I've ran into enough time to learn to play it. So I'd been practicing scales on it for a couple weeks a couple hours a day. Now I've gotten good enough to play a couple folk riffs, and I don't squeak or make irregular sounds.

To be fair I've played Trombone for 11 years and have a good ear. I've also played fretless bass for about 7 years so I am used to playing without frets.

I don't want to play legitimate music on this, just country/klezmer/folk. Does anyone play and have some tips?

Why would I be selling it if I am trying to learn to play it? Check your local craigs list. I got mine off of Ebay though for $65. I know it's not great, I can hear its non-perfect resonance. But it's great for learning on.

I really don't have a clue, I am new to the strings. I could tell you brass prices all day long.

Though I don't play, I've been around a lot of country/bluegrass/Tradtional players. Some common tips for starters are: Don't tighten the bow too much. Put your thumb inside the u shaped part of the bow handle and extend your pinky finger back and place it firmly on the end of the tightening knob. If the bow is the right tension you can roll the entire bow back toward you slightly while it will stay flat on the strings. Use plenty of rosin.
If you're a small guy or have trouble keeping it under your chin, you may want to pick up one of these.
