View Full Version : Lazy Spellers Piss me Off
Prince_James 12-09-06, 08:44 PM The only law I support on the internet is this:
All people who post ANYTHING must have a reasonable grasp of the language they write in. In English, this means the following errors ought to become a misdemeanor offense:
Responce
Torcher (torture)
Prolly
Tho/e
Rouge (instead of rogue)
Buddah or bhudda
Defiantly (instead of definitely)
francois 12-09-06, 08:49 PM rediculous
hors d'eourves
desicate
misdemenor...
whoops!
superluminal 12-09-06, 08:52 PM your full of crap (instead of you're)
Prince_James 12-09-06, 08:54 PM Oops.
In actual, real-world contracts and business/legal documents, I'd like to know I'm not dealing with an idiot. But standardized English spelling in the United States only came about with the Teddy Roosevelt administration. I used to be an absolute spelling Nazi on all matters dealing with the alphabet until I read this little quote from Andrew Jackson:
"It's a small mind that can only think of one way to spell a word."
Prince_James 12-09-06, 08:55 PM There full of crap (instead of they're).
Prince_James 12-09-06, 08:56 PM Oxygen:
Andrew Jackson should stick to what he does best:
1. Having the coolest hair of any American president.
2. Killing people in duels.
3. Killing Indians (my personal favourite).

Ha! Cool hair... yep.
Lord Hillyer 12-09-06, 09:01 PM Andrew Jackson had a posse.
Prince_James 12-09-06, 09:44 PM The improper usage of metaphysics. Metaphysics does not mean "systems of magic and mysticism". It means "the study of Theology, Ontology, and First Principles, stemming from a work of Aristotle catalogued at the library of Alexandria as 'after physics', or in Greek, metaphysics."
leopold99 12-09-06, 09:48 PM Andrew Jackson had a posse.
no wonder you don't get any. you can't even spell it.
Prince_James 12-09-06, 09:51 PM You ripped off Family Guy for that, Leopold. Still, good joke.
leopold99 12-10-06, 12:31 AM i don't watch TV. to be honest i can't remember where i heard it.
Fraggle Rocker 12-10-06, 01:03 AM The improper usage of metaphysics. Metaphysics does not mean "systems of magic and mysticism". It means "the study of Theology, Ontology, and First Principles, stemming from a work of Aristotle catalogued at the library of Alexandria as 'after physics', or in Greek, metaphysics."Yes, I'm much more bothered by imprecise or incorrect use of words than bad spelling. Words like "terrorist" and "fascism" mean something and are very useful for that. When people attempt to use them to mean anything they please, just to show their immense disapproval of something vaguely related, they create misunderstanding.
English is one of the most difficult languages to spell properly; I think only French is in the same class. Besides, many errors are just typos. Still, although I agree that posting something with a lot of errors before taking the trouble to check and correct it is rude to everyone else and is a sign of laziness and sloppiness and that person will never get a job working for me, posting something with sloppy and imprecise language detracts from the quality of the discussion.
Athelwulf 12-10-06, 02:25 AM Oops.
What if you actually say "oops"?

Just like when people say something's gay. It pisses me off.
Athelwulf 12-10-06, 02:31 AM It annoys me when people confuse the scientific definition of "theory" and the layman's definition.
What also annoy me are lazy shortcuts in typing, such as "u" or "r".
Oh yeah, and when it greatly irritates me when people abuse "thou", "thee", "thy", and "thine", and the verb endings that come with this older English. Sticking a fucking -th on nearly everything doesn't fucking make it Shakespearean-era English.
Athelwulf 12-10-06, 02:33 AM And What About When People Capitalize Every Single Nothingdamn Word?
redarmy11 12-10-06, 02:44 AM That is 2 Gayeth.

weed_eater_guy 12-10-06, 04:02 PM omgwtflmao! i thought the net waz supozed to be like this! the 1 sanctuary where i can not give a damn about my spelling skillz!
ITS EVEN MORE FUN IN ALL CAPS, LIKE IM SAYIN SOMTHIN REALLY IMPORTANT!
Actually, I totally agree with you James, lol.
riku_124 12-10-06, 05:00 PM so i would have a lot of misdomeaners huh....?
Fraggle Rocker 12-10-06, 05:48 PM I just don't bother to read the posts that don't meet my minimum standards, so those people don't bother me at all.
I figure, if I am so unimportant to them that they won't take the time to make their writing halfway easy for me to read, then they are so unimportant to me that I don't need to take the time to read what they wrote.
People who have something important to say do their best to make us want to read it.
Prince_James 12-10-06, 07:07 PM Riku 124:
You'd be raped in juvenile hall, yes. By a 12 year old gang banger that is far more "street" than you.
Watcher 12-10-06, 07:27 PM I agree, spelling mistakes are irritating.
More annoying though is somone who can't manage to bring a coherent idea to a discussion and who doesn't bother to understand the history or context of a topic.
Spelling is needed for the final mechanics of the communication process, but if we are only communicating vacuous one-liners, does it really matter whether the words are spelled correctly?
Prince_James 12-10-06, 07:35 PM Yes.
Syzygys 12-10-06, 10:37 PM All people who post ANYTHING must have a reasonable grasp of the language they write in...
I think trying to spell it correctly fullfills the reasonable grasp definition. Also how do you know if:
1. Person simply misstyped.
2. Poster was drunk or drugged.
3. He hasn't got his morning coffee yet.
4. Maybe learnt English at age 30??
Now I say, all people who post should have a reasonable grasp of LOGIC....
That ought to be a capital offense....
And What About When People Capitalize Every Single Nothingdamn Word?
AND WHAT ABOUT WHEN PEOPLE CAPITALIZE EVERY SINGLE WORD? asdf
