The latest (Aug 5(?), 2011) version of AVG seems to have a serious problem. It flags far too many Web sites as virus contaminated. I had to replace it with Avast, since it got so annoying.

I dumped AVG originally for ClamAV because of it being smaller and less bloated, however this has slowly been going the same way as other Antivirus projects as it's now apart of immunet which has the Free vs paid function options applied to it.

I got fed up with AVG breaking something everytime I upgraded it so I tried Avast and it started conflicting with ZoneAlarm firewall and other things. I wound up with Avira and so far I'm happy.

Windows 7 has its own firewall, and I haven't seen any conflict. I like Avira - the only thing I prefer about Avast is the free version checks e-mail, Avira (free) does not.

Anecdotal evidence ahoy: I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials for years now, with no issues, and no infections.

Yes, very important if you're using Outlook Express (or whatever it's called now!) I only use internet e-mail via Yahoo so Avast's e-mail checker is redundant

On Windows 7 it is called Windows Live Mail (which I use).

Avast also seems to work well with PC Tools Firewall, though there might have been problems in past years before they got compatibility established.

In addition to this and that, we have an older Netbook with WinXP, that uses AVG and Zone Alarm Firewall. For some reason, that combo delays the bootup time for the desktop and taskbar becoming fully functional, as well as significantly delaying the start-up time of Internet Explorer (this is minus any pre-bootup scans, splash screens, etc., being set as preferences; and a netbook with a gigabyte of memory is plenty for running basic stuff on old XP).

In earlier days, this caused me to believe that IE actually took almost a whole minute to start-up, which motivated me to switch to other browsers. I feel that Zone Alarm is primarily the culprit, because on another computer with Avast it slowed down IE's start-up, too. The delay was absent when ZA was replaced with PC Tools Firewall. Even completely uninstalling ZA's antispyware bar program that it added to IE made no difference in the turtle pace in start-up.

Please don't be a Linux troll. Leave the Linux proselytizing to pale dateless guys who wrap their identity up in what computer operating system they use.
