Lacking Christmas spirit..

For the past 3 days now, a local Christian group has taken caroling to a whole new level. They have set up huge speakers onto a trailer, and have taken to driving up and down the streets of my neighbourhood with Christmas carols blaring at full blast every night with bright flashing lights, strewn over the car and trailer, bouncing along to the music. Now this would normally not bother me. However three nights ago they came rolling up our street at 8pm and then back down again at 9:30pm. Since they have taken to driving up and down our street several times in one night, last night I thought I would politely approach them and ask them to just turn it down a notch. My reasons were simple and selfish. With a 2 year old and a baby, their very loud renditions of Jingle Bells, with accompanying flashing strobe lights, was waking my children up.. and if any parent can appreciate.. getting a 2 year old and a 7.5 month old to go to bed is a tedious task at the best of times. But each time I have tried to get them to go to bed these past few nights, the carol brigade would come up the street and then back down again, with music so loud, it made our windows shake.. again waking up the kids.

So last night (with my suffering from tonsillitis and a teething baby), when they made their original crawling pass up our street, I flagged them down and asked them if they could turn it down a bit. A reasonable request as far as I was concerned. A few other neighbours also took the opportunity to step out and ask them the same thing (they too have small children). I was then promptly told I was unchristian and lacking in Christian spirit. So the bastards turned the volume up louder and drove even more slowly up our street.. only this time they were stopping for about 3 minutes in front of each house.. and came back down the street after 10pm.

I need to ask. What possesses people to do something like this? Am I lacking in Christmas spirit in not wanting some nutbags to wake up my children constantly? Was it rude of my neighbours and myself to ask them to turn it down a bit? I must admit, I am a little bit cranky.

One neighbour has threatened them with calling the police if they come back again tonight.. and it saddens me to say it, but I support the neighbour. There comes a time when the Christmas spirit goes too far and becomes a public nuisance.

    Ech..

    End rant..:bawl:

they were not showing the chrismas spirit they were flat out being assholes. If they had a true sense of the chrismas spirit they would have turned down the music

Bells that was probably the silliest thing I've ever heard, but let's be honest Christians have never been the most reasonable people even towards other Christians! This was not unexpected, infact it's what I'd expect considering the religious institutions are basically brainwashing everyone. In regards to the incident however I would say technically you weren't being in spirits but then it was night and celebration isn't all day every day ya know. To be in the spirit you would've gone over with warm cookies and milk cheering them on :>

They however only care about Jesus and therefore cared nothing for you, how Christianly of them right?

Sadly, it would seem we may have to. We weren't the only one's who were getting upset by this. Most of the people on our street were out when they came back down the second time around and telling them to go away.

If they did it earlier in the evening, it would have been fine. But to do it that late, when just about all the kids in the street are in bed... It is silly. I would have thought it should have been aimed at the smaller children.

And it was a fairly old couple as well. They honestly think they are doing the right thing in spreading the Christmas cheer. It's all well and good.. I simply asked them to do it a bit quieter or earlier. By that time of the night and having to resettle the children for the third time.. any Christmas cheer I may have had has been stomped on and sent to a fiery death.

And last night, we had some storms roll through, so we thought they simply would not come back. Instead they waited until the storms were past before starting..

I've become the scrooge as far as they are concerned.

I don't know. I just felt guilty. Like I was some kind of scrooge if I dared complain to the police about it. Strange and stupid really.. I thought I would try to appeal to their sense of reason... of which they apparently have none.

Nothing unreasonable, unchristian, or lacking Christmas spirit all for asking them to turn the volume down a bit on their strobing UFO-looking car at 9-10pm. It's not as if you asked them to shut the whole thing off, which hey, at those hours, wouldn't be too unreasonable either. And turning it up and stopping in front of each house later on was ridiculous as well. At that point, I woulda called the cops on em for being unchristian assholes.

Agreed. I'm surprised that Bells is such a pussy in real life, when you consider how she behaves on sciforums.

Be thankful you don't live next to a mosque (or two, or three or....there were thirteen within megaphone distance near my rooms in KSA).

Not to be uncharitable, but I think it's that way for a lot of people.

Yeah, but Bells isn't some freeloading geek. She's a lawyer, a mother, and a wife. And from the way she tells it, she doesn't take shit from anyone in the 'real world'. So I'm amazed that she's let these old bastards just walk all over her like that.

People who make noise at inappropriate hours in inappropriate places, after being told that they are disturbing you, are one of my pet peeves, and resulted in me leaving my on campus accommodation while studying at university. These people are selfish and inconsiderate, and no one should have to put up with that sort of BS.

Anonymity is powerful. eh? I suppose it is a bit surprising that she'd let them do it for three nights running - that would tempt even the most shy to complaint.

I see it this way - I don't blast death metal at three am, even when I'm up at three am and would love to blast death metal. Everyone else needs to extend the same courtesy.

Although the one time I had a neighbor complain was at midnight on a friday, in a college town. Some people do need to get a grip.

Dang, Bells...that's pretty shitty of them..especially since you mentioned you have young'uns trying to sleep. As others have said, call the police...or you can borrow my shotgun, if you want...some rock salt loads might put a damper on their over-the-top Christmas spirit.

I'm not sure how you get "beat up anyone who looks suspicious" from "alert the authorities to the egregious violation of local laws after having politely complained." Care to explain?
