View Full Version : Lacking Christmas spirit..
For the past 3 days now, a local Christian group has taken caroling to a whole new level. They have set up huge speakers onto a trailer, and have taken to driving up and down the streets of my neighbourhood with Christmas carols blaring at full blast every night with bright flashing lights, strewn over the car and trailer, bouncing along to the music. Now this would normally not bother me. However three nights ago they came rolling up our street at 8pm and then back down again at 9:30pm. Since they have taken to driving up and down our street several times in one night, last night I thought I would politely approach them and ask them to just turn it down a notch. My reasons were simple and selfish. With a 2 year old and a baby, their very loud renditions of Jingle Bells, with accompanying flashing strobe lights, was waking my children up.. and if any parent can appreciate.. getting a 2 year old and a 7.5 month old to go to bed is a tedious task at the best of times. But each time I have tried to get them to go to bed these past few nights, the carol brigade would come up the street and then back down again, with music so loud, it made our windows shake.. again waking up the kids.
So last night (with my suffering from tonsillitis and a teething baby), when they made their original crawling pass up our street, I flagged them down and asked them if they could turn it down a bit. A reasonable request as far as I was concerned. A few other neighbours also took the opportunity to step out and ask them the same thing (they too have small children). I was then promptly told I was unchristian and lacking in Christian spirit. So the bastards turned the volume up louder and drove even more slowly up our street.. only this time they were stopping for about 3 minutes in front of each house.. and came back down the street after 10pm.
I need to ask. What possesses people to do something like this? Am I lacking in Christmas spirit in not wanting some nutbags to wake up my children constantly? Was it rude of my neighbours and myself to ask them to turn it down a bit? I must admit, I am a little bit cranky. One neighbour has threatened them with calling the police if they come back again tonight.. and it saddens me to say it, but I support the neighbour. There comes a time when the Christmas spirit goes too far and becomes a public nuisance.
Ech..
End rant..:bawl:
pjdude1219 12-05-07, 06:49 PM they were not showing the chrismas spirit they were flat out being assholes. If they had a true sense of the chrismas spirit they would have turned down the music

call the police. if these people are truly "disturbing the peace" then the cops MUST arrest them. simple as that.
spidergoat 12-05-07, 06:59 PM Why do you hate Jesus?
darksidZz 12-05-07, 07:01 PM Finally a thread worthy of me :D
Bells that was probably the silliest thing I've ever heard, but let's be honest Christians have never been the most reasonable people even towards other Christians! This was not unexpected, infact it's what I'd expect considering the religious institutions are basically brainwashing everyone. In regards to the incident however I would say technically you weren't being in spirits but then it was night and celebration isn't all day every day ya know. To be in the spirit you would've gone over with warm cookies and milk cheering them on :>
They however only care about Jesus and therefore cared nothing for you, how Christianly of them right?
Call the cops. Why haven't you done this already?
call the police. if these people are truly "disturbing the peace" then the cops MUST arrest them. simple as that.
Sadly, it would seem we may have to. We weren't the only one's who were getting upset by this. Most of the people on our street were out when they came back down the second time around and telling them to go away.
If they did it earlier in the evening, it would have been fine. But to do it that late, when just about all the kids in the street are in bed... It is silly. I would have thought it should have been aimed at the smaller children.
And it was a fairly old couple as well. They honestly think they are doing the right thing in spreading the Christmas cheer. It's all well and good.. I simply asked them to do it a bit quieter or earlier. By that time of the night and having to resettle the children for the third time.. any Christmas cheer I may have had has been stomped on and sent to a fiery death.
And last night, we had some storms roll through, so we thought they simply would not come back. Instead they waited until the storms were past before starting..
Why do you hate Jesus?
I've become the scrooge as far as they are concerned.:p Bah humbug!!!
Call the cops. Why haven't you done this already?
I don't know. I just felt guilty. Like I was some kind of scrooge if I dared complain to the police about it. Strange and stupid really.. I thought I would try to appeal to their sense of reason... of which they apparently have none.
Lord Hillyer 12-05-07, 07:15 PM Send them to Baghdad.

Call them next time. Videotape them if necessary.
Nothing unreasonable, unchristian, or lacking Christmas spirit all for asking them to turn the volume down a bit on their strobing UFO-looking car at 9-10pm. It's not as if you asked them to shut the whole thing off, which hey, at those hours, wouldn't be too unreasonable either. And turning it up and stopping in front of each house later on was ridiculous as well. At that point, I woulda called the cops on em for being unchristian assholes.

Agreed. I'm surprised that Bells is such a pussy in real life, when you consider how she behaves on sciforums.
Be thankful you don't live next to a mosque (or two, or three or....there were thirteen within megaphone distance near my rooms in KSA).

Not to be uncharitable, but I think it's that way for a lot of people.

don't let them get away with it you did the right thing asking them to be quiter

Yeah, but Bells isn't some freeloading geek. She's a lawyer, a mother, and a wife. And from the way she tells it, she doesn't take shit from anyone in the 'real world'. So I'm amazed that she's let these old bastards just walk all over her like that.
People who make noise at inappropriate hours in inappropriate places, after being told that they are disturbing you, are one of my pet peeves, and resulted in me leaving my on campus accommodation while studying at university. These people are selfish and inconsiderate, and no one should have to put up with that sort of BS.
Yeah she should beat up anyone who so much as looks suspicious.

Anonymity is powerful. eh? I suppose it is a bit surprising that she'd let them do it for three nights running - that would tempt even the most shy to complaint.

I see it this way - I don't blast death metal at three am, even when I'm up at three am and would love to blast death metal. Everyone else needs to extend the same courtesy.
Although the one time I had a neighbor complain was at midnight on a friday, in a college town. Some people do need to get a grip.
MacGyver1968 12-05-07, 08:06 PM Dang, Bells...that's pretty shitty of them..especially since you mentioned you have young'uns trying to sleep. As others have said, call the police...or you can borrow my shotgun, if you want...some rock salt loads might put a damper on their over-the-top Christmas spirit.
Yeah she should beat up anyone who so much as looks suspicious.
I'm not sure how you get "beat up anyone who looks suspicious" from "alert the authorities to the egregious violation of local laws after having politely complained." Care to explain?
mountainhare 12-05-07, 08:08 PM S.A.M:
Yeah she should beat up anyone who so much as looks suspicious.
I wouldn't expect you to understand, S.A.M. You were born into a primitive culture, where everyone comes a runnin' if your shit isn't of a solid consistency. Privacy and common courtesy are apparently alien concepts to you.

Yeah, aggressive actions towards neighbors are apparently the "new" common courtesy. :p

James, and shot them at them! ;)

I'll reword:
How is how you get "aggressive actions towards neighbors" from "alert the authorities to the egregious violation of local laws after having politely complained?"

I was referring to mountaintop's accusations of Bells cowardice.
However I have to say I am surprised at the persistent carollers. It seems most unChristmasspirity of them.
Xev:

The first night, it was a case of "what the hell is that".. then got down to business trying to resettle the children.
Second night, it was "oh you have got to be kidding me". I had two options, leave both rabid and tired children to start bouncing off the walls and head outside with a cricket bat and hose, or I could try and settle them back down. Had I gone outside angry as I was, the situation would have been much worse and it would have upset my children.
Third night, I went outside on their first pass and made the polite request. When they came back down the second time, my husband and our neighbours had gone outside and told them old couple to go away and threatened them with calling the police. I stayed inside with the children and tried to resettle them again.
Be sure, if they come back again tonight, I'll be dialing for the police straight away. I'm trying to be polite and nice.
....
Well I did say trying..
However I have to say I am surprised at the persistent carollers. It seems most unChristmasspirity of them.
I've never experienced it on such a scale before.
I must say I was surprised the couple driving it appeared to be in their 60's. I mean the wife had christmas baubles as earrings.:bugeye: Maybe I do lack the holiday spirit. I mean there is only so much a person can take.

He said that he was surprised that Bells didn't do anything. I don't think he said that she was a coward for not violently confronting them.

Good luck with all that, they don't sound like nice people at all.

What you need is an IED:
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/intro/ied.htm
IED Overview
An IED can be almost anything with any type of material and initiator. It is a “homemade” device that is designed to cause death or injury by using explosives alone or in combination with toxic chemicals, biological toxins, or radiological material. IEDs can be produced in varying sizes, functioning methods, containers, and delivery methods. IEDs can utilize commercial or military explosives, homemade explosives, or military ordnance and ordnance components.
They are unique in nature because the IED builder has had to improvise with the materials at hand. Designed to defeat a specific target or type of target, they generally become more difficult to detect and protect against as they become more sophisticated.

Thats if you don't have to buy presents for others.

And Jingle Bells is a Christian song??
You're gonna be the bad guy no matter what in this. If the cops get called, I bet the media does too.
"Scrooges call cops on elderly carolers"
He said that he was surprised that Bells didn't do anything.
Yeah, cos she should have gone postal on them the first time it happened?:D
Spud Emperor 12-06-07, 07:13 AM Jesus bells, where's your imagination?
Don't worry about the cops.
Take matters into your own hands.
Whenever the Mormons are coming knocking, me and the chick just nude up and answer the door...They run so fast those Mormons.
So yeah, the carol bangers, get hubby to take out a big bottle of bourbon, sway, swagger, curse profusely, invite them in to share a few pipes and get ready for the pre-christmas ritual goat slaughter, tell 'em if they come back soon, you'll have some chickens ready decapitation by mouth..that sort of thing.
Whenever the Mormons are coming knocking, me and the chick just nude up and answer the door...They run so fast those Mormons.
I dont blame them.
Bells is FOS anyway so why bother responding.

Old Johhno has run off confused and slightly disturbed.
He might come back with some inane shit but he won't be playing crap music.
i will spend the day here. with the best people in the whole world:).
Spud Emperor 12-06-07, 07:46 AM SI-I-LE-NT NIGHT, music to my ears!
Orleander 12-06-07, 10:53 AM Besides, Bells is a story teller.
Isn't everything you tell someone else a story?
Since i have been reading this forum Bells has had one catastrophe after another.
I mean a work of fiction. Maybe, just maybe she is telling the truth but it is easy to understand the scepticism.
Orleander 12-06-07, 10:59 AM You mean a lie
You mean a lie
Maybe she isn't lying this time but dont you find this story odd?

at best the meanderings of a somewhat creative mind.
Orleander 12-06-07, 11:07 AM Maybe she isn't lying this time but dont you find this story odd?
truth is stranger than fiction. I just don't have a suspicious mind I guess. And crap like that happens in my life....just not in that short of time span.
That is the problem. Coming from Bells this is not strange at all. It is not suspicion but gullibilty.
Whenever the Mormons are coming knocking, me and the chick just nude up and answer the door...They run so fast those Mormons.
Don't be surprised if, after this, you get a sudden influx of people knocking on your door dressed up as Mormons. ;)

Bells is FOS anyway so why bother responding.
And yet you chose to respond...
Hmmm..
Anywho.. the weirdo's returned at 6pm last night and the much younger couple driving the car this time were quite apologetic about the elderly couple the previous evenings. It seems they may have been into the Christmas spirits a bit too early. At least the kids enjoyed the lights this time and did not get woken up and turn feral.:)
It's a bit weird for me. I have never really experienced something like this before. We tended to not be home in the previous years and before that, we lived in an apartment.
crickey friggin hell how mean is that to be inconsiderate of others
dont they know they were babies once or did they assume they were born grown up
they might be french hehehe pardon my french but fucking hell
