View Full Version : Labor Unions, "Workers" of America
This is a serious question.
Labor Unions and their members like to call themselves the "Workers of America", as if they work more and harder than non-union workers.
Yet, every union worker I've ever seen takes more daily breaks, has more vacation time, and gets paid more for not working as much.
Is the quote "Workers of America" an insult to Americans that REALLY work more and harder ?
shichimenshyo 04-08-08, 02:29 PM No, its not.
spidergoat 04-08-08, 03:03 PM They don't say that because they work harder, they say that because they represent the interests of the workers, which involves not being exploited. That's why they have more vacation time, more breaks, and more money. Without them, the employers can force them to work longer, take fewer breaks, and take less vacation time.
cosmictraveler 04-08-08, 03:44 PM Labor unions only make up less than 10 percent of the total work force in America. Their ranks have been in decline for over 40 years now. Soon, I fear, there will be none. :(
ang2223 04-08-08, 04:33 PM As a Canadian i always took it mean, all of the unions combined i.e. construction union + factory unions + field unions etc etc.
My husband does road construction, so do most of his brother in laws.. they make more an hour, but don't bring home more. In fact the one gets over time after 10 hrs daily so he can work 36 hours in three days and 6 of them are over time, plays havic with his taxes i'll tell ya.
Asguard 04-08-08, 07:50 PM cosmic i agree its a scary thought that there will be no protecting organisations from exployitive employers

There. FTFY. And soon after that, people will be putting their lives on the line to start new ones.
Already happening, in South America and a few other places around the globe.
What's that line about not learning from history - -- -

My Father is a U.A.W union executive. And yes unions will soon be extinct. Most of the auto plants are offering generous early retirement packages for the current union members who have 20+ years in the union. Then they're turning around and re-hiring temps, with no benefits at all. These jobs use to pay $28 dollars and hour to start. Now the temps they're hiring are only getting paid $14 dollars an hour with zero benefits. That's how the USA automakers are competing with the Japanese. I'm dumbfounded as to why they still can't turn a profit.
