YAY!!!
What's this about? If they're making more LotR movies I'm going to kill one blockbuster clerk for every ticket you guys buy!
sargentlard 10-23-04, 07:32 PM you mean ROTK extended? Yeah I wanna see the extended version too....of all 3 of them.
invert_nexus 10-23-04, 07:35 PM What's this about? If they're making more LotR movies I'm going to kill one blockbuster clerk for every ticket you guys buy!
The extended version of the movie with all the extra scenes.
Waiting. Waiting. Waiting.
It's not out yet, is it? Isn't it released in Novemember? Or do I need to make a trip to the store today?
This is even worse. This is recycled shit being used again, repackaged and charged for a stupid price. The bounty has now doubled, two blockbuster clerks for each purchase!!!

No. It's actually the movie the way it should have been. While there are still critical pieces of the book missing and altered in the extended versions of the movie, it is much closer to Tolkien's original vision than the short movies.
Watch all three extended versions in one go and you have a good 12 hours of movie or so.
I just wish that SciFi would do a realistic miniseries of the books. They spent two weeks on Taken, they could spend the same viewing time on LOTR and we'd have an excellent movie.
And, as to the price, I don't think it really costs much more than the original version of the movie. And even if it does, who cares? You get 4 disks with the extra scenes, behind the scenes stuff, and beautiful packaging. It's worth the price.
And anyone who is stupid enough to buy the original version and not wait for the extended version is just a fool.
Asguard 10-23-04, 10:26 PM they are rereleacing the exstened edition of FOTR and they are exstending it AGAIN
Starthane Xyzth 10-24-04, 05:26 AM The ROTK extended edition is due out in December. I've been waiting for it before buying the film - thanks for your approval, Invert Nexus. I'm hoping we'll get to see the Scouring of the Shire, or at least the fate of Saruman and Grima.
Since Peter Jackson added some original scenes to the movies (especially the second one), he ought to have depicted some aspects of the War of the Ring which were not directly seen in the book: the assaults on Lothlorien from Dol Gulder perhaps, thereby giving Celeborn and Galadriel more screen time. Or the battle in Dale, where we could see a lot more of the dwarves and their brand of warfare. [Check appendix B of the book, if you don't know what I'm on about.]
As for this extra-extended FOTR: first I've heard of it. Will it feature Tom Bombadil? Or the Barrow-Wight? (I hope so!)

the Scouring of the Shire was never filmed, so it won't be in the extended version. Saruman's death was filmed, and will be in the extended version (it was only a last minute cut that kept it out of the theatrical release)

If it was never filmed the first time around, it will not be included in any extended version. I seriously doubt that any of the other battles were ever considered as being included in the movie and therefore unlikely to have been filmed. Tom Bombadil was cut from the story long before principle photograghy started, so there is no footage of him available to add.
Starthane Xyzth 10-25-04, 06:14 AM Good decision about Bombadil on the whole - though I noticed that some of his lines were given to Treebeard, in the extended Two Towers.
Peter Jackson was wrong to omit the Scouring of the Shire, IMHO. The fact that the war touched virtually every part of Middle-Earth was what made it so profoundly affecting: and it was good that Frodo & co. had to sort out a residual problem back home, since this let them demonstrate how much they themselves had changed and grown as characters.
Asguard 10-25-04, 06:18 PM i want TOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM:p
seriously he was one of the best caricters in the whole book and he should have been included
same with the shire battle. it was important and it got cut GRRRRRRRRR
Starthane Xyzth 10-26-04, 07:28 AM May I ask what you liked about Tom Bombadil? I liked the way he dispatched the Barrow-Wight - scary apparition, would have made a good prelude to the ghost army of Dunharrow.
Another part which should not have been left out was the attack by wolves outside the gates of Moria. Done in the dark, with glowing wolf eyes and Gandalf's use of fire, that could have been pretty dramatic. At least they reintroduced the wargs (looking, though, more like hyaenas than wolves) in the second movie.
Asguard 10-28-04, 10:42 PM It was more his power that got me. In the book he is way more powerful than even gandalf, but his power is in nature. I dont know, just seems to be a very empty story without him

I concur. I thought the greatest disappointment of FOTR was the missing Bombadil. More than any character in the entire saga, Bombadil gave us a sense of history: Tom was older than all races, than the Ents, than the mountains even. To me, this gave the story a true Epic sensibility. Also, to see the four hobbits being saved from the 'old nasty' willow by Bombadil would have been priceless.
Starthane Xyzth 10-31-04, 03:44 AM What really ought to have been included was a brief treatment of the tale of Beren & Luthien, which would be seen in flashback as Aragorn recounted it to the hobbits. His relationship with Arwen was significant as a repetition of their ancestors' romance, since the union of elf and human was such a rare event.
The flashback story could have recycled some of the Lothlorien visuals to depict Doriath; it could even have starred Vigo Mortenson & Liv Tyler!

It is touched on in the extended version. The scene where Aragon is singing softly to himself, and Frodo asks him what he was singing. He tells him that it is the story of an Elf maiden and a man who fell in love. When Frodo asked what happened, Aragon says "She died". (There is a little more to scene, but I don't remember all of what Aragon said.)
guthrie 10-31-04, 05:33 PM I am vindicated in my decision to wait until they produce the "complete footage boxed set on 15 DVD's" of LOTR.
Meanwhile, although having Bombadil in solves the point about the swords etc, and also makes a nice circularity with killing the witch king of angmar, he is best left out to avoid confusing the 99% of punters who've never read the books.
Exxcept the whole battle scene in Movie II never happened in the books, yeah, let's fret about swords.
guthrie 10-31-04, 07:16 PM Well, apart from that. I realised after the films came out and quesitons started on the web, that i was actually a Tolkein nerd, and had become so without realising it since I had read the books etc long before. So, lets talk about swords, they confirm us all in our nerdishness. :)
Starthane Xyzth 11-01-04, 12:50 PM Finding those ancient swords in the barrow seems more significant, and believable, than assuming that Aragorn was simply carrying them around just in case: that his spare weapons happen to be millennia old, and designed to fight Ringwraiths!
I always thought it beautifully ironic that the Barrow-Wight, said by Bombadil to have been an evil spirit unleashed from Angmar long before, had acted to preserve and eventually unearth the Numenorean weapon which could destroy the former Witch-King of that same realm...
There is a little more to scene, but I don't remember all of what Aragon said.
All he did was give the names of Luthien & Beren and mention their love, followed by "She died." It was wrong to leave out the fact that they were ancestors of his.
This looks utterly delectable:

"It’s essentially Final Fantasy X set in the LOTR universe. The guy we talked to didn’t even make any apologies. He just said that they took all the stuff that people like the most about the best RPG’s and tried to put it all into one game."
You can play as good AND evil.
And it's for PS2.
airavata 11-02-04, 08:09 AM Adding something about Beren and Luthien would have been ideal, but hardly practical in a movie format. Besides, I think anything from the First Age of Middle Earth and pre - First Age in Aman is hallow ground, too sacred for cinema.
guthrie 11-02-04, 01:49 PM And would also add so much more to the complexity that it would be extremely hard to put into cinema. Mind you, perhaps we could do a cinematic version of "The Silmarillion", funding provided by millions of Tolkein fans from around the world.

Why should it be any more unfilmable than Greek mythology?
That's what Tolkien was trying to do when he first came up with the Silmarillion stories: create an "English" mythology just as detailed and engrossing as the Classical or Norse.
I reckon that the War of the Jewels, at least, would make a decent TV miniseries - maybe 6-10 episodes. As long as a reasonable budget was available, on a par with the modern Star Treks.
guthrie 11-03-04, 01:30 PM Hence why I am now suggesting that Tolkein fans put up say, ten pounds each. How many do you think would do it? If we could get 5 million it would make 50 million, which would be a pretty good starting amount. The tricky bit would be choosing the director and cast, and then it would take a few years to film. But it would be fun though.
Wow, what a great idea!!! Here in Croatia we have a LOTR forum and I could suggest that to the board!!! Simply brilliant!!! :p
Starthane Xyzth 11-24-04, 04:23 AM If it was funded and cast by online fan groups, just imagine the endless debates and polls about who should play the various characters!!
Anyone got a few suggestions? I'd have to think about it a while...
Starthane Xyzth 12-13-04, 02:02 AM Now it's been released, who else has watched the extended version of ROTK?
It was, as I expected, a great improvement on the cinema release - and well worth sitting down for 4 hours! Without giving too much away, I'll say that the death of Saruman and Grima was handled fairly well, though with obvious haste, and really should have been left in to start with.
The Mouth of Sauron, though very well visualised and extremely creepy, was still on screen too briefly - the design gallery slideshow about him was much longer than his actual appearance. And Aragorn was rather out of character to slay him in cold blood, almost unprovoked; surely, killing an ambassador is an act more befitting Sauron!
Plus, seeing more of the setting inside the Dwimorberg was very welcome. So was the scene with Eowyn & Faramir becoming involved - but, again, treated too briefly, certainly compared with the almost tedious Aragorn and Arwen scenes.
I didn't think it possible to improve upon the Battle of Pelennor - yet they managed it. Once again, the deformed orc general has at least as much screen time as Faramir... he was a fun character, but he could use a name... :D
Star_One 12-13-04, 03:38 AM Were their any more shots of Easterlings?
I mean why make fantastic costumes then only use them once (in the 3rd film) for about 2 seconds
Starthane Xyzth 12-13-04, 04:21 AM No more Easterling closeups that I recall. We did get a better look at the Corsairs, however.
Oh - and I'll correct my previous post: Faramir has 3 whole scenes which were previously chopped, so I'd say he's now a bigger player than Mr. Quasimod-orc.
Star_One 12-13-04, 04:36 AM Im going to cry :( lol, thanks for letting me know though :)
Im sure i heard somewhere the orc is called "pigface" or something similar, i cant remember where i saw it though.
goofyfish 12-20-04, 06:55 PM Here's a little clip (http://www.tolkiencollector.com/bilbo5.mov) that didn't make the final cut.
 Peace.
sargentlard 12-20-04, 07:34 PM 50 mins of extra scenes.
The package which is on sale for $100 has the 3 extended editions packaged in one bundle...oh man. Anybody wanna buy me a christmas present?
P.S Goofy....I hate you.
Starthane Xyzth 12-23-04, 07:31 AM Yeah, my brother's getting the 3-film extended set for Christmas. We must make a day of it sometime soon.
