View Full Version : Just out of curiosity... The-Hybrid 03-30-02, 01:21 PM Is there a reason that most of the planets are named after greek/roman gods/goddesses? I never really got that... Adam 03-30-02, 07:49 PM Their naming conventions survived because their cultures were so strong and pervasive, and many of the things they did remain with us. For much of the renaissance of science and technology, it was considered that "learned" people knew something of the classical languages (Greek and Latin). And people got stuck into Latin for naming things in science anyway. Just convention to stick with those old names, no point changing them. The-Hybrid 03-30-02, 10:28 PM That makes sense. I kind of figured as much, anyway. Just wanted to make sure :) |
