I just heard it right now on CNN, the Pakistani military for the past couple of days have been fighting with Al Q and supposedly an Al Q has been caught (at least according to the Pakistani military)
http://edition.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/asiapcf/03/18/pakistan.alqaeda/index.html
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- Pakistani forces have surrounded what may be a "high-value" al Qaeda target in Pakistan near the border with Afghanistan, President Pervez Musharraf told CNN.
This is currently very fresh news, so if anyone has a link about this capture. Don't hesitate to post!

Other reports quote military officials saying they believe it to be al-Qaeda's Egyptian number two, Ayman al-Zawahri.
Very interesting development, this man is the brains behind the organization. It should be commented that Osama is still at large. But arguably this is actually more important because he co-ordinates attacks. Osama is really just a figurehead, but the movement has moved on from Al Q into a disorganized ideological movement, and surely they are not dead...yet.

Al Q #2 caught
Or... not.The U.S., however, said there was no information that al-Zawahiri was present last week, and the Pakistanis later followed suit...
After initially dropping broad hints that they believed the target was al-Zawahiri, Pakistan backed off the claim over the weekend, saying it could be an Uzbek or Chechen commander or even a local criminal or gangster. Gee, my mind was momentarily washed squeeky clean from any concerns about Pakistani nuclear proliferation, dictatorship, fundamentalism, support for terrorism, and it was like, wow, they're the good guys, on our side, 'k?
A very successful "counterterrorism" campaign. :bugeye:
This thread is kinda dated...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/3552209.stm
The commander of the Pakistani operation, Gen Saftar Hussein, said intercepted telephone conversations suggested the principal target was an Uzbek or Chechen militant commander, who might have fled the area...
..He said a bullet-proof vehicle, flanked by two cars, had raced through a line of troops on Tuesday, and its whereabouts was now unknown.
and thats from Saturday..
It's all gone a bit quiet since then.

But the blowback will leave Musharraf's government at war with various Paki tribal factions for the rest of the duration of his government.

So was he caught or not caught? Newsweek said he was reported as shot by US Special Forces but they were waiting on the Pakistanis to get their say first.
