I'm starting to resent foods that are fake versions of what they appear to be. This is easy enough to explain about textured vegetable protein and fake meat. But I'm at my mother's for the weekend, and there is this repugnant smell coming from the kitchen. It is "turkey bacon". The turkey phenomenon is slightly disturbing. When I was a kid, we had turkey hot dogs. They never were quite the same as a regular hot dog. Over time, I just stopped eating hot dogs. I mean, the things are sort of disgusting. And, well, turkey dogs just aren't the same. A few years ago, my brother switched from beef to ground turkey for his gameday nachos. And, frankly, they just weren't the same. After maybe a half a season of ground turkey, he just switched to chicken. Fine with me. Tastes better. No illusions. It works. Not the same as ground beef, but unlike ground turkey, that's not the point. So I don't know what to think of this turkey bacon. I've yet to actually consume any of the stuff, but the smell of it isn't promising. With TVP "fake-un", it's easy enough to ask what's the point. The point is about proselytizing. Eat this product instead of the real thing. It's healthy. And it's just like the real thing. Well, bullsh@t. It may be healthy, but it's nothing like bacon. My solution is that if you're afraid of bacon, just don't eat bacon. If you want turkey, just go get turkey. But don't try to pretend. It seems ridiculous. I'm waiting for turkey chicken. If anyone ever tries marketing that, I'll consider the possibility that the Apocalypse is upon us.
I am sick and tired of artificial bullshit in my foods. I love all-natural, real meat, real untampered-with vegetables and fruits, and real juices. Unfortunately, even things which say "all natural and fresh!" are teeming with all kinds of different chemicals
