Israel warns Iran on nuclear work

Iran could face sanctions if it is brought before the UN

The Israeli defence minister has warned that the country will not accept an Iranian nuclear capability.

Shaul Mofaz said that at this stage his government gave priority to diplomatic action aimed at convincing Iran to give up its nuclear programme.

But he added that Israel was preparing for any eventuality and had the "capability to defend itself", after Iran resumed nuclear research.

Iran insists the programme is purely aimed at meeting its energy needs.

However western countries suspect Tehran may be seeking to develop nuclear weapons, and talks over the issue are stalled.

    Precedent'

The UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) agency is due to meet on 2 February to discuss whether to refer Iran to the Security Council.

    IRAN'S NUCLEAR STANDOFF

Sept 2002: Work begins on Iran's first reactor at Bushehr
Dec 2002: Satellites reveal Arak and Natanz sites, triggering IAEA inspections
Nov 2003: Iran suspends uranium enrichment and allows tougher inspections
June 2004: IAEA rebukes Iran for not fully co-operating
Nov 2004: Iran suspends enrichment under deal with EU
Aug 2005: Iran rejects EU plan and re-opens Isfahan plant
Jan 2006: Iran re-opens Natanz facility

    In depth: Nuclear fuel cycle
    Profile: UN Security Council

The council has the power to impose international sanctions.

Mr Mofaz told a conference in Herzliya that Israel "must have the capability to defend itself, with all that that implies, and this we are preparing".

Israeli leaders have repeatedly stated that any military action would be part of an international effort, and Israeli officials have denied plans for a unilateral preventive strike.

Israeli concerns about Iran have grown since the election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has called for Israel to be "wiped off the map".

The warning appears to be a veiled suggestion that if diplomacy fails, Israel may be planning a repetition of its pre-emptive strike against Iraq in 1981.

At the time, Israeli aircraft destroyed the Osirak nuclear research centre near Baghdad.

    Concern

However analysts say it would be hard for Israel to achieve similar success in Iran, which has learned from the Osirak attack.

Its nuclear sites are dispersed around the country and heavily protected.

Washington, Israel and many European powers distrust Iran, partly because it had kept its nuclear research secret for 18 years before it was revealed in 2002.

The crisis intensified earlier this month when Iran resumed research on uranium enrichment.

Western countries are concerned because the process could ultimately be used both to generate electricity and to make nuclear weapons.

Israel does not admit or deny having nuclear weapons, but it is widely believed to possess some.
    **********

Well its long over due, someone needs to bitch slap this country, they seem to think they are a superpower, because they have some oil money, i have no doubt in the next week or too, they will be excepting the russian offer of uranium enrichment, even though they said nobody bullies them, but the arabs know the jews hands are not tied by the united nations, and when israel says something they mean it.

I think we are all going to see what a bitch slapped pussy, iran is in the next few weeks.
Bring it on babe israel, you do a great job pimping for america, now its time to bitch slap one of your whores iran.

    You notice something?

I never heard Iran say they were going to attack anyone. When they made the comment about the destruction of Israel, the entire Israeli controlled world media wrote about how bad Iran was.

Here is Israel implying actual military action, not commemorating a historical event as happened in Iran. Where is the condemnation?

Hypocrisy. Double Standard. Israeli World Domination.

Israel has drawn up plans for strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities with bunker busting bombs supplied by the US, but analysts say it has no intention of carrying them through while diplomatic pressure is growing on Tehran.

Israel regards Tehran as the single greatest threat, a view sharpened by the Iranian president's call for the destruction of the Jewish state and his denial of the Holocaust.

Last month Binyamin Netanyahu, the former prime minister and leader of the Likud party, said that if he wins the general election in March he would follow the example of former prime minister Menachem Begin who ordered the Israeli air force bombing of Iraq's nuclear plant in 1981.

"The Iranian threat is an existential one. In this regard I will continue the legacy of Menachem Begin, who thwarted Iran's neighbor, Iraq, from acquiring nuclear weapons by adopting bold and daring measures. I believe that is what Israel needs to do," Netanyahu told Israel radio.

    **
Binyamin Netanyahu, former president who says he is going to bomb iran, once in office no wonder iran is frantically trying to develope nukes before march, the big question is will they develope them in time, and will the jews vote Binyamin Netanyahu into office, if they dont it could cost millions of lives, once iran gets nukes bin laden will have them in a week.

All this crap is making me sick, lets just get on with WW3 and rearrange the world order once and for all. Thats all i'm waiting for. Anyway what credibility do these Isrealis have now that they lied to us that Iraq had WMD's? And why can't Iran just desolve this islamic government of theirs and adopt a demicratic republic? Maybe that will impress the U.S-Isrealis. I just can't help but imagining what will happen if Saudi implements a nuclear plan. Will that pinch the nerves of Isreal? How long will the Arab league keep waiting in the wings?...And they call this ridiculous war ''Jihad"...huh. Who's fooling who?

    They have no credibility.

It doesn't matter though because Israel and the U.S. are going to attack Iran regardless.

We need to stop them from switching to the Euro in March, which, conveniently, is the time Israel mentioned striking them. It's the same reason why we invaded Iraq. Nukes are just an excuse to get us to find a way to attack them without being further hated by the world.

We're gonna do our damned best to do whatever needs be to keep our dollar from crashing with oil being changed to the euro since that's the only thing that keeps it strong. If that means making up false reasons, then so be it. Let's just hope that Iran's allies don't join in the fray because then it will be WWIII.

    It's all about the $$$.

Even if Iran develops nuclear weapons it would give no legal right for Israel or any other country (read - the USA) to attack. According to the international law that would be an act of agression.
