A Convenient Scapegoat: The Right's Demonization of Muslims
Prior to September 11th, it was rare for the right wing to even mention the Islamic faith. However, in the year since the terrorist attacks, many on the Right have characterized Islam as evil, its founder as demonic and its sacred texts as violent and "primitive." The stream of vitriol has gone unabated despite a plea for tolerance issued by President Bush within days of the attacks:
America counts millions of Muslims amongst our citizens, and Muslims make an incredibly valuable contribution to our country. Muslims are doctors, lawyers, law professors, members of the military, entrepreneurs, shopkeepers, moms and dads. And they need to be treated with respect.
On the same day that Bush made his remarks, Louisiana Congressman John Cooksey offered a decidedly different outlook when he called for racial profiling of Muslims. As Cooksey put it, "If I see someone [who] comes in that's got a diaper on his head and a fan belt wrapped around the diaper on his head, that guy needs to be pulled over."
