This is known to be oft-told nonsense from an era when parents, teachers, & clergy would tell lies to discourage behavior they thought was harmful or immoral. I still remember an aunt telling me I would have a Cherry tree growing in my stomach if I swallowed Cherry pits. Similarly, the effects of marijuana have often been exaggerated, while the evidence indicates that the use of alcohol is undoutedly as bad or worse.

There is a classical joke from that era with the punch line: “I’ll just do it until I need glasses.”

BTW: I will go on record as being against the use of hallucinogenic drugs for myself, but not for others. I will also go on record as wondering what small percentage of the population never masturbated. My guess is 5% or less.

I can also remember a belief that a person had only a limited amount of sexual energy. Allegedly, it could be used up early in life, leaving you sad later. I think various studies have shown just the opposite. Those who were sexually active early in life and had frequent sex, including masturbation, were the ones who were still active at advanced ages. I do not think this is post hoc ergo proctor hoc. I think it is due to some people having a stronger or more active sex drive, making them active earlier and keeping them active until late in life.

I think (am not sure) that there was a time when the Catholic Church considered it okay to lie in order to further the cause of religion. They might still adhere to that policy, although I am sure they would not publicize it and might deny it even if it is official policy.

Official policy or not, I am sure that a majority of devout Christians would answer yes to the following question: “Would you lie to a person if you thought it would save his soul?”

BTW: I put a very high value on integrity, but would lie without hesitation to save my own or another’s life. I would also renege on a promise made in a hostage situation, although I would go to great lengths to keep a promise given freely.
