    SO, I got rid of Norton and installed Avast... And thank Bejibbis I did -- Turns out, my computer is as sick as a Haitian prostitute who refuses to wear protection...

    Here is a list of the viruses it identified:

    Virus Name: Win32:Trojan-gen. {UPX!}
    File Name: C:\MDOS.EXE\gamma.exe
    VPS version: 0425-1, 06/17/2004

    Win32:Hidewnd [Trj]
    C:\MDOS.EXE\calc32.exe\[UPX]
    0425-1, 06/17/2004

    And another:
    Win32:Ataka
    C:\MDOS.EXE
    0425-1, 06/17/2004

    Win32:Trojan-gen. {VC}
    C:\WINDOWS\alchem.exe

    Win32:Trojan-gen. {UPX!}
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\a.exe

    Win32:Trojan-gen. {Other}
    C:\WINDOWS\twaintec.dll

    ---

    Because it was my first scan, Avast couldn't fix the files... and I didn't want to delete them, because I was unsure what the effect would be on my PC. I don't want to start operating like a blind surgeon in a dark room...

    Please help... MY baby needs to get well

    A person on another board asked me to do this:
    ---
    Hey, archive those files up, password protect the archive with "virus" as the password, and then send them to: [his email address]

    As soon as you can please.
    ---

    I am wary about doing this...

    Fuck Fuck... Another 10 hours in front of the Pc cleaning up adware/spyware/worms/trojans/and viruses...

    I did it again though, which means I'll be clean for like a week. I'm learning so much though, I'll barely have to ask you for help as often as I have...

    I think I must have started 10 threads in this section in a week... UGH!!!!

    WTF... I beginning to think that it would be a good idea to just give up on the net completely.

    ---

    Anyway... Thanks again for all your help... everyone... for the PMS, the emails, the suggestions, the links, the EVERTHING!!!

    Sorry to ask another favor

    But can anyone recomend a free prograss that will moniter my system processes in more depth than the one offered in XP... Like maybe tell me the root folders of the processes so that I can tell if they are valid or if they are disguised...

    Blub... I haven't slept well in like 5 daze. Is this what keeping you PC safe means...

    here is an idea, get what ever software you need from a clean source, then format and reinstall. By now you and your virus have proberly made a hole lot of damage

    , Making a clean install a much better and faster solution.

    I've never tried avast myself. I really should just to see what it does for me. I've heard here and there that it might be a bit too proactive about finding viruses. It's a possibility that they aren't viruses. I find it strange that Avast should find so many viruses that none of the other antivirus programs find. What magic technology are they using?

    Edit: Although, a clean install might do you good. It's entirely possible that all these viruses were put in when you had your sasser problem.

    Those trojans you have there can be deleted. They appear everytime I use kazaa. But there should come no harm from getting rid of them.

    Well, I just installed Avast! No false positives, no viruses at all. I haven't run an antivirus on here for months. You people and your unsafe ways. I don't understand you virus victims. Of course, Sevenblu's problem may be all caused by his recent Sasser worm infection which I am protected from by a router.

    Has anyone else in here never had a virus in their entire online life?

    I only had one virus that affected my system in any way. It was the Sasser virus, and I got it while I went online the first time with my new internet connection. And only because I had to use the stupid browser of my provider for registration.

    If you've been up for days you should realise it's just you dealing with a new learning curve of what to do when dealing with your PC, once you know (and hopefully don't forgot by either remembering or writing down) you'll be able to resume your sleep pattern

    As for XP, you could go to the Start button, click it to get it to display the menu. Click RUN... and then in the white run box type "CMD" this will bring up a commandline environment within windows.

    Once thats up type "TASKLIST /SVC" this will help identify what processes are running and under what names. (It will ID issass.exe (the fake process) from lssass.exe (The real one) and it does have functional commands you can find out with a /? switch. [Namely type "TASKLIST /?" for help]

    You think yours is bad?

    Back in the day when I still had Windows ME

    , I had over 100 viruses on my computer!!!

    I was using Panda Antivirus back then, silly me.

    The best anti-virus is BitDefender Professional. You won't regret it. Absolutely lithe and light you wont lose a moment of speed.

    So, what do you guys think the best antivirus is?

    @sevenblu

    I would strongly recommend formatting, once again. And next time, install your antivirus along with your Windows install. Saves a lotta trouble.

    I suppose you do a lot of downloading from Kazaa, which is where I got my viruses from. Now that I have solved the virus problem, I have to find out a way to combat adware and spyware.

    F-secure has the best virus detecting abilities with v. good heuristics. My favourite is etrust antivirus. It has good detection, a very small footprint and is the quickest of them all. And is cheap.(20$). I have yet to try Boomerang which is quite good apparently. It uses both the RAV and Kaspersky engines.

    My computer is running so well now that I cleaned the registery, the old files, and the viruses that I don't need to format... I'm being stubborn, but I don't care - if something goes wring, I'll just learn to fix it.

    Going to buy a new Pc one of these days anyway.

    ---

    I am really impressed with Avast, but I've heard excellent things about Kaspersky and eXtendia AVK (which is supposed to be the best of the best).

    F-Secure has a free online scanner, which is nice, if the virus you have allows you to get online.

    ---

    By the way... it's not possible to run two anti-virus progs at once is it?
