View Full Version : Is the universe trying to reach equillibrium TheHeretic 02-14-05, 05:59 PM Is the universe trying to reach equillibium between matter and energy? TheHeretic 02-16-05, 08:00 PM you know. Like osmosis. TheHeretic 02-16-05, 08:01 PM Maybe life is a way for the universe to keep the balances of energy and matter somewhat equall. This is just hypothetical cato 02-16-05, 08:54 PM I dont think so, because matter is energy, (e=mc^2) just in a different form. Ophiolite 02-19-05, 08:03 PM Is the universe trying to reach equillibium between matter and energy? The language hear implies intent upon the part of the Universe. Is that your intent? WarpTraveler 02-22-05, 12:52 PM For something to try to reach equilibrium, it doesnt need intent, chemical reactions reach equilibrium just to make everything equal on both sides of the equation depending on radioactive decay as well as energy and chemical combinations of the products etc. SO my answer to your original question is an overall yes because at all points to some extent something is trying to reach a chemical equilibrium so until all things become equal it will try to reach that state, now that doesnt mean all particles have to be the same, just as it doesnt mean that everything is the same consistency everywhere in the (possibly infinite) universe. It simply means that things are likely attempting to reach their simplest most stable atomic and subatomic states. Now if you mean some other type of equalibrium what is it? 2inquisitive 02-22-05, 01:46 PM I believe the heat death of the universe is the state of equilibrium, the 'End' of the universe as we know it. All motion stops, even in individual atoms, and all matter and energy simply desolve into the vacuum. All that is the universe would still be there, but in an unrecognizable form desolved within the vacuum from whence it came. The vacuum itself is the key to the universe, it is NOT simply 'nothing' IMHO. blobrana 02-22-05, 03:57 PM Hum, I believe the heat death of the universe is the state of equilibrium. Well, i suppose that the universe is trying to reach equilibrium, then… (And in one sense, it’s at equilibrium now , er, if everything adds up to zero…) dav57 02-23-05, 03:35 AM Is the universe trying to reach equillibium between matter and energy? I'm a firm believer in the big rip theory whereby dark energy ceases to exert a pressure on the universe and thus acceleration of the universe stops. At this point in time the local attraction of matter will also cease and gravity will no longer exist. Matter will not affect space and space will not affect matter - a perfect state of equilibrium. Of course, this is on the understanding that dark energy is the cause of gravity and I guess there's nothing wrong with linking two of the greatest unknowns in science, is there? WarpTraveler 02-23-05, 05:20 PM That or everything will become zero dimensional via the big rip [if you dont understand zero dimensional just ask] and thus create an equilibrium Starman 02-26-05, 11:07 PM Is the universe trying to reach equillibium between matter and energy? No, it is building pressure at the maximum pressure point it will divide. Ophiolite 02-27-05, 08:16 AM No, it is building pressure at the maximum pressure point it will divide. Define pressure in this context. Explain how expansion is causing an increase in pressure. Explain or quantify the maximum pressure point. Explain or clarify the process of division. Justify any of this bizarre notion. |
