In hannibal, Hannibal cuts open a mans skull and removes a part of his brain while he is still alive, is this possible?

I dont plan to ever try it, but it would be cool to know if you can actually remove part of a humans brain (a part un nessecary for human activity) while they are alive

PS - I dont know if this belongs in here or Biology and Genetics

Sure it is. Ever heard of brain surgery? And especially frontal lobotomy?

but in brain surgery people are out cold, in the movie ray liotta is still concious when lector cuts open his head, i tihnk my question has been answered in that yes it is possible

just to expand on that question, would it be possible to perform brain surgery while someone is under hypnosis, i watched this show and this woman had major surgery under hypnosis and all she felt was like a pencil drawing across her stomach, is it possible to perform brain surgery like that, for people who are allergic to anastetic (i cant spell so just ignore it)

I'm not sure that they're ever given a general anesthetic although some are of course unconscious due to trauma. The brain itself feels no pain and patients are kept awake so they can report any changes.

they are, i believe, administered a local anasthetic so they don't feel their head being cut open.
