A videotape shows a sheriff's deputy shooting an unarmed Iraq war veteran who appears to be following orders to get up off the ground, and now the FBI is investigating for possible civil rights violations.

Elio Carrion, an Air Force policeman who spent six months deployed in Iraq, was to have rejoined his unit Tuesday. Instead, he was hospitalized in good condition.

The incident began Sunday night, officials said, when Carrion was a passenger in a blue Corvette that was speeding about 100 mph near the Chino Hills, California, area, east of Los Angeles.

The driver, whom authorities didn't identify, failed to pull the car over after police signaled to do so, leading to a five-minute chase that ended abruptly when the vehicle crashed into a brick wall, said Cindy Beavers, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

What happened next was captured on video shot by amateur photographer Jose Luis Valdez, who told The Associated Press that he recorded the incident after the car crashed in front of his home. KTLA-TV aired the videotape early Tuesday, then distributed it later in the day.

In the tape, an unarmed Carrion appears to be on the ground as a deputy sheriff stands above him with his gun drawn.

"Get up!" the deputy shouts. "OK," Carrion says.

"Get up!" the deputy shouts again. "I'm going to get up," Carrion says, and he begins to rise.

The deputy fires three shots, reportedly striking Carrion in the chest, leg and shoulder.

Moaning while on the ground, Carrion attempts to explain to the deputy he's an Iraq war veteran. "I mean you no harm," he says. "Shut the [expletive] up!" the deputy shouts. "Shut the [expletive] up!"

"Beavers, the sheriff's spokesman, declined to release the name of the deputy involved in the shooting but said he was put on leave. She said Sheriff Gary Penrod had invited the FBI to join the investigation."

Put on leave the nutter needs to be arrested before he shoots anyone else, i dont believe police should have guns fullstop, however i know in america they dont have a choice because everybody is armed to the teeth, the amount of times i have heard of US cops beating up people is unreal, i think its high time when they recruit people they run sanity tests on these people, to weed out dirty harry's and rambo's who seem to think the badge is a licence to shoot innocents or beat up coloureds.

I get the feeling sometimes the only expierience you are required to have to be a US cop is to be a doughnut eating racist, hell in new orleans they all went AWOL during its worst time in history, when they were needed most, anybody would think it was a nuclear attack in new orleans, 50% of the police force fucked off including high ranking officers, and then the cheeky sons of bitches expected to get there jobs back afterwards.

Hey Ricky love your mandarin letter, very sylish as are all things oriental, yellow power, screw white power & black power, i have terminal yellow fever.

Thank you for the compliment on my avatar and your input on the subject. I beleive cops should be givin sanity tests aswell. But, not everyone is armed to the teeth, mainly blacks and whites are owners of guns. But have you seen this video on this?

I saw it this morning, I have been in a depressed mood from it all day. The man had commited a crime, but none so serious as to be shot three times. Cops can be low lifes sometimes. But there are very good police officers in our justice system.

Yes there are good cops in America, & the UK but the problem is this the police are like a secret society, cops dont grass on eachother & they cover eachothers backs during cover ups, policework is like no other job, nobody should be allowed to cover eachothers backs, no cop should be afraid to come forward and say a cop is on the take or a drug user.

& the worst thing of all is when they commit crimes against the public, they usually are only dismissed from the force, or they wind up doing very little time in jail for there crimes.

In my view all cops should face the full weight of the law, if not more, when they break the law, that way it deters loonies from joining the police force, because they know even if they break the law, the cards are stacked in there favour.

No i did not see the video yet, but like you i get disgusted & angry when i see so called humans inflicting pain on others for laughs , people like that need putting down.

I completely agree, but i must say this video is worth watching. It has been mildly filtered to prevent you from seeing actual blood spilling. But then again it was just a tiny bit to much for me. I think you should watch it to get a better understanding of this. But it's clear enough for you to know that the FBI doesn't need to investigate it.

Well, alot of cops here don't get charged with there violent crimes. They get suspended with pay.

Well, from the video I've seen, when the guy tries to get up, it does look like he's making a lunging motion and so the cop thinks the dude is gonna tackle his legs.

You gotta put yourselves in the cops shoes especially when crap like that happens all the time, people resisting arrest and assualting cops. And with this dude speeding and evading police resulting in a chase, you gotta expect something is up.

All because this guy is an Iraq War veteran, don't let that get in the way of making judgement on this. The guy fighting in the war is irrellevant. Too bad people's emotions get in the way of things like this.

And heck, I bet there woulda been just as much fuss if the cop used a taser on the guy instead of shooting him. There's been too many anti-cop issues going on lately.

But did you hear them tell the man to stand up?

A lunging motion seems like something you would have to do after being in a wreck. I mean he must have been injured. So standing up must have tooken effort.

Then why shoot him three times?

The man was obviously already injured what damage could he do worth getting shot?

The cop shot three times due to natural instinct and training. Hell, if he really was threatened, he woulda unloaded the full clip and kept pulling the trigget until it went *click* a few extra times.

Yep, which makes it an accident. Shit happens. It was a bad situation to begin with. Obviously the guy was gonna have to be stood up, but that little lunging motion can make a huge difference. Either the criminal gets shot or the cop gets grappled around the legs by the criminal and winds up hurt instead. Which would you rather have done? Gotta love how, usually liberals, tend to get on the side of the criminals rather than those enforcing the laws protecting us from them.

For those that are upset that a so-called "honorable" Iraq War veteran was shot by a cop, I must ask this:

"What is an honorable Iraq War veteran doing in the first place breaking the law by speeding and evading the police"?

    Valid points.

But they told him to stand up. They should have called an ambulance before anything. They did not need to point guns at an unarmed man. He obviously didn't have a gun on his person. If the police would have done there job right wouldn't they have told him to lay flat on the ground and search him? But they didn't call an ambulance which is required in an accident, nor did they search the person properly before taking action. If you are argue that they might not have been able to do this. Notice the man was deffintly injured. He could not have been much of a resistant person. So they could have easily done this without shooting him. It was the police officers error to handle the situation properly.
