"The president's position is that the all-volunteer military meets the needs of the country and there is no discussion of a draft. Gen. Lute made that point as well," National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.

In the interview, Lute also said that "Today, the current means of the all-volunteer force is serving us exceptionally well."

Still, he said the repeated deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan affect not only the troops but their families, who can influence whether a service member decides to stay in the military.

I don't expect a draft to actually happen, but I'm curious as to why this guy would come out and suggest this.

If this occupation is to continue, there needs to be more troops and recruitment is down.

So what are the chances for a draft, d'you think?

Considering that leaving Iraq seems rather difficult right now.

The Republicans won't push for one for political reasons, and the Democrats won't continue the war for long once they are in power.

A draft would end the war proper quick.

Attacking Iran will require many warm bodies. A depressed economy will probably help the Army recruiters some but it won't get all we'll need. I'm sure 912 will happen soon to reaffirm America's resolve in this global war on terrorism. The draft is just part of the sacrifice we need to do for security.

Maybe you should enlist immediately to ensure security.

The mention of the draft was almost certainly an unauthorized slip on Lute's part. A draft will never sell for this war, and everyone vying for Washington power knows it. Pre-emptive draft for a war yet to be announced will not sell any better.

You're right. It's political suicide.

Unless Iran attacks us first, there won't be an invasion of that country. Iran ain't gonna' attack first... thus, there will be no invasion.

Not necessarily; one could always pretend that a pre-emptive strike will allay any fears of attack.

We didn't do that against Russia during the Cold War, why do you think we'd suddenly decide to do it against Iran?

There is one major difference between Russia and Iran in this matter.

Could you guess what?

Iranians speak Farsi and the Russians spoke... well... Russian???

Since the American President barely speaks English (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2007/08/11/bush-to-reporter-i-can-_n_60065.html), language could not be a consideration, but that is only my opinion.

Are you saying it was fear of the Russian language that kept Russia safe?

That if the Iranians began to speak Russian it would considerably lessen their chances of being attacked? :p

I passed a simple joke and you found one of your typical ways of spinning it into an insult on Americans. Sam, you're flaming Americans again. Take your cattiness elsewhere if you can't rise above that. It's tiresome to constantly have you attack this country with petty remarks. You wonder why people get hostile with you here. How about if people ran around dropping things about how "those people with push buttons on their head were primitive cave people." Care to compare the level of education of the average Indian against the average American? How about literacy rates.

SAM, that is the definition of flaming. You're a moderator, act like it.

I passed the joke back to you. Don't dish it out if you can't take it. :)

And honestly, just what did you expect I would say in response?

Or were you baiting me? :)

SAM... state whatever you want. Explain how I made a joke at your expense? You did. You are latching on to excuses and, as usual, not accepting the blame for the attacks you make. Your "joke" might have come across as such had your history not contained mountains of anti-American rhetoric. I could care less what lame excuse you offer. Continue to do what you do and I'll just start editing out your comments. I'm on vacation... I've got plenty of time.

No problem; I have no objection to being edited. :)

No bias of course. ;)

edit: I find it incredible that in a thread discussing the policies of an Iraq War Czar, someone can actually object to a criticism of American lingual weaknesses. :p

These jokes are deserved. And this was particularly light hearted. Seems like you just have a personal issue. Or would you be editing Conan O'Brien's posts if he was a member? :p

There is a big difference between dishing well deserved criticism on the USA for its current foreign policy, and insulting all Americans because we have a guy who, admitedly, isn't the best speaker.

SAM, you as usual, twist one legitimate criticism into something else that gives you an opportunity to drop other non germane insults & criticism.

Wow, that was deep! YES, I DO, have a personal issue with people, like SAM, constantly dropping insults that have no purpose in this debate.

You should keep personal problems to yourself is what I was getting at.
