View Full Version : Invisibility Cloak

personally I think it is extremely chillingly cool
as if taken out from Neuromancer (ok it was a bit more advanced in Neuromancer)
quoting Hichhikers Guide To The Galaxy
"That is really amazing," he said. "That is truly amazing. That is so amazingly amazing that I think I'd like to steal it."

If you want to know the mechanism of this optical camouflage demonstration, please see the following brochure:

Neurocomp2003 05-18-04, 08:42 AM old news, this was like 3-4years aago haven't they tinkered with all thte mistakes yet?
I know it's not new. I myself read about this some 2 years ago, but stumbled on it again recently. Don't remember it being discussed at Sciforums.

not like then it appears that the greenish gloom has been taken care of
eburacum45 05-19-04, 12:50 PM This sort of camoflague only works when you look at it from one direction; the whole idea of invisibility using a projection of the background is not really feasible for most purposes.
could be handy for snipers
ElectricFetus 05-19-04, 01:03 PM We need active camouflage: a suit that can change colors.
c20H25N3o 05-19-04, 01:44 PM Would be handy to hide a :m: grow in my garden. Excellent :D
Closet Philosopher 05-19-04, 04:13 PM Let's build one
ok! what do we need. let's make a list.
1. a highly flexible surface that can function as a low resolution monitor, or a highly flexible surface which's material is able to change colours just like pixels
2. some sensors which take input of the surrounding environment and shade the pixels in appropriate colours guiding from a "camouflage" algorhytm/software
(.. please go on, I have a study paper to write)
but I still think that a invisibility cloak is very cool. even if this isn't that great.
we need such a cloak as in the movie Predator
Closet Philosopher 05-24-04, 10:32 AM Damn, they already made one

And the story: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/11.08/pwr_invisible.html
Logically Unsound 05-24-04, 11:04 AM or.............. harry potter!!
POTTER BA**AR*
greywolf 05-24-04, 01:27 PM psi-eye are u there?
We used to do this 10 years ago with apples and a big honking digital camera and a big honkin projector. (granted, it only worked in shades of grey)
This is just a different type of green screen technology.
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 04:35 AM what, be invisible?
Closet Philosopher 05-26-04, 08:19 AM It is a starting point. If snipers stand still on a window ledge, then they would be hard to spot. Dangerous, dangerous.
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 09:20 AM if snipers stood behind you, they would be hard to spot.
Well, if it were to be non projection, it would be much more reliable, but a lot more advanced.. What about if you could use a display system whereas a fabric would display a different image depending on the angle of view.. you know, like when you get a hologram card in a cereal box, how when you look at it on one direction its one image, and a totally different image the other direction.
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 01:19 PM why not just have an army of people who are really good at standing behind people.
why not just have an army of people who are really good at standing behind people.
Because sometimes it isn't possible.. I can't even believe I am addressing this useless comment. Isn't technology about improvement? What if what you want to get at is directly in front of someone? You can be really good at being behind them all you want, you still wont get it.
Logically Unsound 05-27-04, 03:56 AM then you have a SECONDARY amry that is good at distracting people by saying and doing strange things.
i wasnt being serious, i was just pointing out that most problems are solved simply if people let them, etc.
LMAO. You just became my favorite new poster.
I'm taking the poster which says "Victory - It's only for those who don't know when to give up"
