Does anyone have ideas for a completely new type of government? Not that I'm planning to overthrow anyone I'm just curious of what we could come up with.

I can see it now, "The Sciforums Manifesto". LOL.

    How about ...

A benevolent dictatorship supported by a meritocracy ... Kind of like China during the Ming Dynasty. Not exactly new, but a twist could be added: The Fearless Leader wears the Medalion of Office which an explosive device. Each year the population decides by electronic ballot whether or not they want a new Fearless Leader.

    Interesting Chagur.

I was just thinking of a total democracy, not a rebulic with democratic principals like the United States.

With the communications revolution, almost everyone is connected by phone or computer. What if all major laws, court cases, and declarations of war were voted on by all citizens.

This would be pratically replace the legislative, judical and executive powers in major situations.

I don't have the time, inclination, interest or knowledge to vote on every legislative act. That's why I elect someone to do it for me. Also, who proposes the bills? Who studies the bills? Who oversees the state bodies? Us? There's too many of us - there would end up being a self-selected bunch of political and legal junkies perverting legislation for their advantage. In the US only around 50% of eligible voters bother to even got to the polls once every four years (or two if you count Congressional and Senatorial). WHy would they care to vote every day? I wouldn't trust 'the people' to have enough knowledge to do so anyway. Admittedly most of the elected officials are hardly any better, but at least they have people around them to offer advice. Much better to trust them to select between two pretty similar candidates on the basis of 'trust' (if any of us can stop laughing on that one) than genuine issues.

I've laways been of the mind that democracy is a bad idea anyway. Much more impressed by Chagur's idea. The benevolent dictatorship is the ideal. Impossible, but the ideal. Check out Plato's drunken pleasure cruise argument in the Republic. Always makes me chuckle to think of that whenever democracy is discussed.

But then, we may get the best, but at least democracy stops us getting the worst (Dubya excluded).

Democracy is two wolves and a sheep deciding on who to eat for dinner.

I think a goverment much like the United states but where Federalism is strictly enforce onto the federal, state and local goverments.

Salty, I believe that is the first line of an old Benjamin Franklin quote which went:

"Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what's for lunch. Liberty is a well armed lamb contesting that vote."
