View Full Version : Internet Explorer pop ups? Q25 04-20-04, 07:28 PM IE just started to pop up some stupid adverts,is there any way to prevent these? are there any other browsers w/out pop ups/ads? got win98. thnx Stryder 04-20-04, 07:55 PM If your running 98 then it's more than likely you've got some adware onboard. Probably something similar to IEDRIVER.exe running on your system (A horrid program that pops up adverts and puts a hole through any firewalls just so they can continue to harass you.) You could potentially get other browsers but it's more than likely to be more down to the OS. (As soon as Microsoft integrated the browser with the OS, all hell broke loose) The usual answers apply here, get a program to remove adware if you yourself don't have a clue how to edit registery keys (or dare to), make sure you have anti-virus programs and trojan removers, get yourself a firewall in some form. (either a hardware one, or a software one) lastly, when you do clean your system up, make a backup of your configuration files, as they help if you should ever suffer an infection again. A number of the other posts on Adware can help in this area too. Mr. Chips 04-20-04, 10:50 PM Yes, remove adware. I also use Pop Up Stopper, the free edition. Works quite well. Avatar 04-20-04, 10:56 PM just don't use Internet Suxplorer and all will be just fine www.mozilla.org ;) Thor 04-21-04, 04:19 AM I recommend Opera. Avatar, why the change in heart? Avatar 04-21-04, 04:23 AM why from Opera to Mozilla? because I find that Mozilla shows more pages correctly and also somehow the looks (it's more compact) and I use Mozilla's mail client as my default Thor 04-21-04, 04:28 AM Uhm...do you recommend Mozilla then? What other features does it have over Opera? Avatar 04-21-04, 04:36 AM I advice you to download it and try for yourself, see what is good for you and what is maybe not. You can always uninstall later Thor 04-21-04, 04:56 AM Oh how neutral a reply was that!! Gah! Avatar 04-21-04, 05:02 AM you'll have to live with it //sneers machaon 04-26-04, 03:04 AM You should be running a firewall anyway. Download zonealarm or norton internet security from kazaa or buy it. These will stop the popups. Closet Philosopher 04-26-04, 02:00 PM I agree with the mozilla fans. Mozilla is the untimate web browser. Scrap the internet explorer crap. I have a love affair with Mozilla :) Captain_Crunch 04-27-04, 08:40 AM I'd completely forgot about pop-ups, I run Opera and its great. Another thing I noticed that IE is so slow in loading pages, I found this out because I need to use IE for ebay. As Avatar said, some pages wont work correctly with Opera and IE is still required. But yeh, ditch IE in favour of Mozilla or Opera etc. Avatar 04-27-04, 08:45 AM I have used Mozilla on ebay.co.uk Avatar 04-27-04, 09:10 AM though lately due to some font size problems on linux with Mozilla 1.6 (i think that maybe I have trashed smthing, but can't really think of anything.) I'm using Firefox from mozilla.org (prev. Firebird) Avatar 04-28-04, 10:36 PM have a look at this website way to block (additional) i-net ads: http://everythingisnt.com/hosts.html Avatar 04-28-04, 10:37 PM frm slashdot Posted by timothy on Wednesday April 28, @05:00PM from the spy-v-spy dept. RetroGeek writes "Falk eSolutions AG is claiming it can detect and defeat pop-up and pop-under ad blockers. The best quote is that when they detect an ad blocker they will 'replace a pop-up or pop-under ad with what are called "floating" ads, or ads that appear as transparent images over Web-site content.' As far as I am concerned they can place as many transparent images as they want. He probably meant translucent. It should be easy to defeat the detection, after all visit a web site, the pop-up blocker detects a Javascript command, then doesn't run it. Replace this with: the pop-up blocker detects the Javascript command, runs it, then places the result into a bit-bucket. Any Mozilla devs here?" WebGangsta adds "While this may ignite another round of online advertising purchasing, this news doesn't affect anybody who uses a customized HOSTS file to stop the majority of ads from appearing anyway." |
