Wondering if anyone can help me with a problem. I have Win98 and updated my IE to version 6 (SP1?) and since that I have a problem with "pop-up" windows. When I click a link I get the frame of a window that is titled "about:blank" and the rest of the window doesn't load.

    I can't uninstall it from the Add/Remove feature and I can't back-date IE to 5.5 (won't allow it).

Any thoughts? I've tried everything I can think of and hit the troubleshooting sites at MS but they're useless.

I'd appreciate ANY help some of you guru's can offer.

    Thanks

Sounds to me like a problem with the number of instances of IE.

I know one problem that IE had was it had no upperlimit for the number of instances that could open, this was a danger as all you needed is one malicious trigger happy javascript and you'd have popups appearing until you ran out of resources.

I mention this because it sounds as if your system has been tricked into running out of resources, or applying an upperlimit.

Are you trying to open a new window while running other programs? Does your startbar contain alot of icons near your clock? Are your running MSN messenger or Outlook while opening the window?

I ask these question because the first two are based on "resource issues", namely you have alot of programs taking up room in the background that eat up the room new programs would use.

A way with dealing that would be to check:

www.mlin.net For Start-Up CPL (Control Panel)

It's a program that will allow you to turn off background programs from loading at boot up. (You just untick them, and if you find your system needs those files at boot, you turn them back on)

The main ones that should be loaded are@
    LoadPowerProfile
    SysTray
    ScanRegistery

(Although you could load a mouse driver, tablet driver, screen drivers, anti-virus guards etc.)

That should deal with a resource problem, the other one, (The question over MSN Messenger or Outlook running) is a real problem.

You see both of those use a MSGSRV32 driver that has a nasty habit of hanging.

What it actually does is it handles calls for the instances of some programs (Notibly Microsoft ones), it's called the "Windows Messaging Server" but it actually just acts as a Kernel to tell what drivers to load for that program.

I sometimes find that it has a habit of becoming unstable and goes to "Unresponding", now you can CTRL+ALT+DEL and find the MSGSRV32 entry and remove it, but it doesn't necessarily mean it will work when you try to run that process again.

    BTW
The main reason MSGSRV32 locks when it tries to load outlook, is because of MSN Messenger. It try's to handle the Driver loads of both programs (That are seperate but have been badly intergrated) and it fails this because it doesn't "FORK" (Namely it doesn't Clone itself to make two individual instances to deal with each process seperately)

If Windows had been Open Source it would have been fixed by now.

You just have to remember that window95/98 doesn't "FORK" like it should, which basically means when you run something, remember to let the machine have as many resources as possible.
(Don't even think about moving the mouse or manipulating something in another window, or it will bomb out)
