Well I today installed this new version of the Explorer and found it OK but it was made only for Windows 7 64 bit. It's leaner and cleaner looking to me and does the same things it did before but it has other features that I've not used as yet. I really don't need much to make my boat float so I'm satisfied with what they did. Nothing bad that I can tell as yet but time will tell.

Just wondering if anyone else has installed this new version and what they might think about it. I like the feature at the top where there use to be 3 lines with stuff in them but now there's only one line which makes the page open up more to see all of it.

I have IE9 installed. However, I still prefer to use Avant (a browser which is essentially a front end to IE).

It's surprising that even now in July, IE9 is still in second place to IE8 by users of Windows7 -- worldwide. Apart from speed, IE9 itself might yet be considered something of a dinosaur by users of Firefox, Chrome, Opera, or even those that ride on IE's Trident engine (Maxthon, Avant, Slim Browser, IEPro, etc). But for most IE users to still be clinging to a definite relic like IE8 seems to indicate that they really don't care when it comes to browsers. They're simply using what was originally supplied with the OS. Hopefully a good part of those numbers are actually due to the conservatism of businesses, the majority of which were still using IE6 on their office computers back when IE8 was released.

But those using IE8 can't use the new IE9 because it was only made for the IE9. So IE8 users will have to first upgrade their entire OS in order to use IE9, which I think is a real rip off.

No, the whole point was that this pertains to Win7 users -- they're still clinging to IE8.

IE9 is inching up, but it's boggling that at the end of June and here into July it is IE8 that is yet dominating in percentage with Win7 users. (Well, probably not that boggling -- since, as mentioned before, it was a task to finally rid the web landscape of IE6 back when IE8 was a newborn and IE7 was already "old".):

". . . this is valid both in the united states and worldwide, with ie9 grabbing the second spot in terms of usage share behind its precursor, internet explorer 8. . . . at the end of june 2011, some 47.94% of windows 7 users in the us were still running ie8 . . . ie9 is now just second overall in the us behind ie8 with 21.8% usage share as of the last day of june. . . . worldwide, ie9 usage share on windows 7 is exiting the month with 17.0% usage share for june . . . overall, ie8 still retains the browser king crown..."

When I upgraded from IE8 to IE9 I didn't notice any significant difference. As I indicated before, I prefer Avant, which looks very similar to IE - being a front end, which handles tabs much better.

That would explain the apathy. IE9 was supposed to have been a serious overhaul of the Microsoft browser, which is why it can't work with WinXP. But apparently not major enough (should be no surprise, given their lackadaisical attitude about improving it in the past).

Nice to hear that Avant is still being updated, and it adjusted to the transition to IE9. IEPro is surely out of the game now, since their new Chinese owners barely made it compatible with IE8 a couple of years ago (they actually still call it IE7Pro). AFAIK, IEPro was the only free quasi-browser or set of add-ons that provided an inline type of spellchecker for internet explorer.

The Avant people are now going through a major overhaul, where the new version will include Orca (their Firefox based product).

You're right, companies should never be allowed to update their own technology as they see fit.
