View Full Version : Incredible sex.
Now that I have your attention*, I'd like this thread to be about new music you have 'discovered,' and wish to share with other people. By discovered, I mean music that you don't hear played on the radio, save by trendy broadcasters in Portland or college rock stations. If one of you fags says Radiohead, I'm gonna poop my pants.
Also, I don't want this to be music snobbery. We can all do music snobbery. I can be a snob, I also make things up, call names, and don't actually know anything about music. In otherwords, I can be far more obnoxious about my opinions. So please burn in hell.
I'd like this to go something like "Hey guys, I got introduced to this awesome band, Ambulace Ltd.. They're sort of poppy, but have really beautiful songs and solid instrumentals. Kind of remind of the Beatles. They mean a lot to me, and you should listen to Primitive (The Way I Treat You). It's indie, but seeing as how everyone wet themselves over Interpol, this should blow you away."
And then you'd go download the song (or some of the artist) or however you acquire music, and say something like "it was really crummy, and I won't tell you how bad your taste in music is, as this isn't the thread for it, but if you like shit like that, you should also listen to *blank*"
I promise to try out your music if you promise to try out mine.
Deal?
*Cause we all know how obsessed you are with sex (or are reading this to see who is obsessed with sex. Sure, right.) I wanted you to read this. Sue me.
sisyphus__ 03-21-06, 08:48 PM Now that I know it isn't about sex I am not going to read it. Women need to know that men want their women to have incredible sex with them, and that they love them.
It is unfortunate you won't participate.
makeshift 03-21-06, 09:18 PM I like this thread already.
Uh. I already made a thread about this, but I have to go with Porcupine Tree. They're pretty similar to Pink Floyd, but their songs tend to be more on the long side, like Tool (usually 5-12 minutes long). But the songs are so well composed, you don't even notice. You just get so completely sucked in and absorbed.
Download Deadwing, or Trains, or Nine Cats, or Chloroform, or whatever you find when you query "Porcupine Tree". It's all good.
I recall that thread. I have their "Shallow," which I didn't really care for. However, I did go on iTunes and listened to more of their stuff, and decided they weren't as the bad as the names I was about to call you.
As per the rules of this thread, I'm off to, uh, 'listen' to more of their stuff. Heh.
On a completely unrelated note, I hate musical pirates. They're total thiefs and a disgrace to pirates everywhere. Most don't even own a cutlass. The best they can do is pirate drunk.
*Finishes fotie*
charles cure 03-21-06, 09:48 PM theres a great band called codeseven that i love. actually they broke up about a month ago but they have an excellent album called dancing echoes/dead sounds. its like a little radiohead, a little of the cure, and maybe a little of my bloody valentine (but not much). at one point my band toured the east coast of the US with them and they were great guys and i couldnt stop listening to their record for abpout 3 months. maybe you'll like it maybe you wont, but its relaxing and atmospheric and excellent.
you could check some of it out at www.myspace.com/codeseven i would recommend the song "nasty little revolution" on there.
this is like my dream thread, since i love a million bands and want everyone to listen to them. im sure i'll post and post and post on this until you all want to fucking shoot me.
My nominees are:
Os Mutantes
Jorge Ben
oldish..but amazing.
Idle Mind 03-21-06, 10:25 PM My favourite local band (and it helps that I am friends with all of the members, and they are very cool people): Open, Parachute! (http://www.myspace.com/openparachute). Xerxes, you are from Calgary, yes? They are heading out there this May if you like what you hear. ;)
Also, a little bit of a different band from the aforementioned, but technically awesome: A Textbook Tragedy (http://www.atextbooktragedy.com). These guys are all young kids from Langley, BC, and can play like crazy. Plus, Nick is one of the best drummers I have ever had the pleasure of watching. They are a bit on the intense side though, so be warned.
A little bit more well known in that they are signed to a semi-major label: The Fall of Troy (http://www.myspace.com/thefalloftroy).

i was in a band on that label. the fall of troy is good, but i think they get more hype than they deserve, because the one kids father is in the allman brothers.
Idle Mind 03-21-06, 10:39 PM What band were you in?
And I think the Fall of Troy are excellent musicians (well, the guitar player anyway), and his arranging skills are both unique and quite exceptional.
EmptyForceOfChi 03-21-06, 11:07 PM papoose,

Communist Hamster 03-22-06, 01:48 AM Steely Dan.

And I think the Fall of Troy are excellent musicians (well, the guitar player anyway), and his arranging skills are both unique and quite exceptional.
i was in a band called Endicott. we broke up a few months ago. yeah i do like the fall of troy, their record is growing on me.
My nominees are:
Os Mutantes
Jorge Ben
Just checked these guys out. Typically I'm not one for music from south of the border, but I liked them. I must acquire more of them, *winkwink*
Idle Mind, all your music I was like bleh. Never really cared for boy rock like that. Bands of pretty people singing about feelings and shit. Just not my thing. Fall of Troy I can listen to, though they scream a little too much for my taste. What sort of music is this considered? Like, I need to give it a label. What do I label it?
Speaking of Canadian bands, Wolf Parade is good. Indie as fuck, though. They sound similar to Interpol but the music does more. Not so monotonous, not so produced.
Another band I was really into for a little while was Autolux, a noise-pop band from L.A. Lots of quirky percussive sounds.
Drive-by Truckers, a southern rock band that sings about southern stuff. It's rock, but with a twang. They sing about Ford plants shutting down and Reagan and killing bankers that want to take Daddy's farm. Check out the songs Sink Hole, Hell No I Ain't Happy, Decoration Day, Puttin' People on the Moon, and Daddy's Cup.
And hey, could you also recommend songs by the artist, as well?
viagra by pfizer aka me love you looong time

Mmm, I don't have time to discover music.
Anyone who does should get a job and move out of their mother's basement =)
Just kidding... I actually have a friend who recommends his indie stuff to me. I like Wolfe Parade..I'm sure you've listened to Block Party.. try out Sleater Kinney. Indie as well. Pretty interesting, I think.
I'm into musicals, so I'll recommend Jesus Christ Superstar. Don't have to be religious to enjoy it; in fact many branded it sacreligous. It's fun to hear Jesus and Judas sing, anyway. Try "Heaven On Their Minds" Actually, I have a feeling you won't... haha, but give it a chance. It doesn't make you a fag, just open-minded =)

I hate to use the Brazil theme again.. but there is another less well-known band that deserves mention: Jets to Brazil. They're previous incarnation (Jawbreaker) is also nice.
PS Roman if you're hinting to me you want to hear more of that southern stuff.. I have good quality rips that can be uploaded.

I have a job, where do you think I download music from? They have a faster connection than I have at home!
sargentlard 03-22-06, 06:16 PM Bahkta...his album India all over is very interesting. Relaxing, heavily Indian influenced, lounge music.
Disha...Bhakta's protege, sappy lyrics but nicely sung.
Aqualung - Brighter than sunshine.....been listening to this song a lot lately. something very humble about this song.
Oasis - all around the world....oldie but a goodie.
been listening to Incubus a lot lately.
makeshift 03-22-06, 08:02 PM Built to Spill is grood stuff. It's kinda like Pinback. Download songs like, "Car" or "Big Dipper" or "Carry the Zero" or "Dystopian Dream Girl". They're all good shit.
And if you wanna hear a great random song, try Pinback, "Seville" -- It'll knock your teeth out.
Idle Mind 03-22-06, 08:10 PM Idle Mind, all your music I was like bleh. Never really cared for boy rock like that. Bands of pretty people singing about feelings and shit. Just not my thing. Um, I fixed my name for you. And, Open Parachute isn't my band, it's a friend of mine's band. Their recordings really don't do them any justice; it's their live show that makes them good. So much energy, and a huge sound. If it's not your thing, that's cool.
The Fall of Troy is what I guess you would call screamo/experimental/progressive. It's too hard to fit a lot of bands like that into one single genre.

Oh gosh, sorry about the name! It's fixed now.
When I said 'your music', I just meant the bands you recommended. And I know what you mean about live shows. I go to a lot of shows like that (or try to) just for the energy and sound, but never listen to it elsewhere. Even listen to live metal.
But live pop-punk is my favorite.
My nominees are:
Os Mutantes
Jorge Ben
oldish..but amazing.
hahahaha os mutantes?
What's wrong with that? By the way, can you tell me what 'na vao se perder por ai' means?
hahahaha os mutantes?
Oh yeah, hipsters are way into them.
that means go on and get lost :)
since we're on brazilian music, listen to bebel gilberto
Ahh.. thought it had something to do with herding goats :D
You should both know that I'm not hip at all..
you dont look/sond hipish
btw i was just surprised that you've even heard of os mutantes... they're pretty old... they were part of a movement called jovem guarda in the 60's
Yeah, 60's Brazilian music got real popular here in the alternative music scene in the 90's. Here being the States.
You serious? I wouldn't be surprised if bossa nova had gained some popularity, but not late 60's/70's stuff.
Varda,
Like most favourites, I found them completely by accident. Thank god! If only Brazil were still creating such awesome music... :( We need to revive those military dictatorships.

if we gained anything from the military dictatoship, it was that outburst of geniousness that came from wanting to say things and not being able to
one of my favourite songs from that time is Cálice by Chico Buarque de Holanda... they lyrics go:
Pai, afasta de mim este cálice
Afasta de mim este cálice
Afasta de mim este cálice
De vinho tinto de sangue
which in english is:
Father, take this cup from me
Take this cup from me
Take this cup from me
Of blood stained wine
That is a piece of Jesus' prayer in the mount of Olives "Father, if thou be willing, take this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done." but cálice in portuguese has the same pronouce as cale-se (shut up)
It's a very strong melody also
I like going in the main page and seing my name under "Incredible sex"
makeshift 03-23-06, 07:43 PM I agree, analbeads, Hooverphonic is good shit.
They're really getting quite popular in the US now. For example,
about a month ago, I was playing GTA: San Andreas and heard Hooverphonic's 'Too Wicky' mixed in a rap song while changing the radio stations in my 'Pimp-mobile' as I chauffeured whores around San Fiero.
Then I heard another one of their songs in a cell phone commercial.
Here's a fatty list:
Decemeberists
They have some good songs, and obsession with a maritime Imperial Britain. Quite indie.
Blood Brothers
They make a lot of noise (screaming, mostly), though their latest album, Crimes, is pretty easy to listen to. By far, it's their most accessible album. Love Rhymes with Hideous Car Wreck may be their best song off that album (though my favorite is Celebrator). But if anyone asks you if you listen to the Blood Brothers, say you listen to their older stuff. Your favorite album should be March on, Electric Children. Otherwise, you'll lose scene points.
A.C. Newman
This guy was/is in the New Pornographers, but then decided to do a solo album titled The Slow Wonder. Catchy tunes, but not pop-catchy.
Iron & Wine
A band of one. Very talented guy, though. Really mellow, sot of folky. He's the guy who does the Such Great Heights cover for that M&M's commercial. I think just about anyone in would like the album Our Endless Numbered Days.
The Faint
Another hipster band. This is indie dance music. An oxymoron, yes, but catchy none-the-less. Look into the album Danse Macabre.
Death From Above 1979
Two member band, but sounds much bigger. I think it's a keyboard and bassist. It's sorta punk, sorta rock, pretty noisy. The song Black History Month, definitely worth getting. The best of their stuff, easily.
Mcluksy
These guys sound much like the Pixies. It's worth it to listen to em just for that. I recommend the songs Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues and Alan is a Cowyboy Killer, though anything off their album Mclusky Do Dallas is good (if you like bands that sound like the Pixies).
Silversun Pickups
Very quiet band with a lead singer that sounds like a girl. Borderline emo (mopey emo, not 80s emo), but the songs are too... thoughtful to be considered emo, and they don't shriek nearly at all.
stretched 03-23-06, 11:08 PM You`re funny Varda.
Idle Mind 03-24-06, 01:46 AM Roman, I happened to see the Blood Brothers when they were on tour with Coheed and Cambria last fall, and they are absolutely amazing. Listening to their stuff pre-show took a while for me to get into, but once I did I was hooked. I think of their stuff, Cecilia is my favourite song. But, I like a lot of their music and, like I said, incredible live show.
*edit*
Another good band that was on that tour I was referring to earlier: Dredg. That guy is an amazing singer. His voice is crystal clear in the live show, which is a difficult thing to accomplish.
Another band that is just gaining a lot of popularity now that I should recommend is Thrice. Very odd, and complex, but very cool if you can appreciate what they are attempting.
Oh, I'm jealous. I'd love to see them live.
Ambulance vs. Ambulance would be my favorite.
My favorite thing about the Blood Brothers are their lyrics, honestly. So creative, great imagery. It's a shame you can't understand most of em.
Idle Mind 03-24-06, 01:55 AM Haha, I know what you mean. They have a very interesting dynamic between the two vocalists as well.
Oh! And another band that many of you Americans likely haven't heard of is Moneen. Their live show is the most intense I have ever witnessed. Their music isn't really conducive to rocking out, you wouldn't think, but they rock out harder than any other band I have ever seen.
RAW2000 03-24-06, 04:19 PM music that never gets played much on radio.....
Depth Charge, Melt Bannana, Enviromental Science (check out their track "The day the zag stood still." classic)Used and Abused records, The Operation, Attica Blues Mo Wax records, Ramus on Bolshi records. Anything on Ninja Tune records. Although I heard all of that late night/early morning on Radio one(England.) so its not nessesarily that rare. that reminds me also....Rare force on skint records.
And saying Radiohead can't be that wrong I hadden't heard half of Kid A or Amesiac before I got them.
You`re funny Varda.
oh, is that sarcasm

Athelwulf 04-07-06, 02:10 AM ... Radiohead.
:p
Okay, I'm gonna say The Mars Volta, who I've been listening to since September or so, even though there's a chance that you all already know of them, since they've been at least on VH1, at least once. I'm sorta sheltered, so I haven't heard mention of them in mainstream culture since last summer.
I'm also gonna say Madredeus, in case Varda or anyone else hasn't mentioned them.
Zarklephaser 04-12-06, 03:52 PM And whose taste in music really matters then?
Definitely not yours.
Of all the bands put forth (that I actually tracked down and listened to), I liked Os Mutantes the best.

I saw the Mars Volta play a club show for about a hundred people in 2001, I believe. I cannot say that I am a fan, but it was an interesting show. Seven songs over about two hours with lots of extended jamming.
allisone417 05-14-06, 07:07 PM Mostly my music collection consists of concert band pieces, especially Holst and Philip Sparke, soundtracks, jazz like mingus, swing/bigband, podcasts and a lot from a few good well known bands like Coldplay, U2, Dave Matthews, and Pink Floyd.
Most of my stuff you've never heard of, and probably dont care to hear. but for the record, one of my favorite songs, called Not Yet by Michael Camilo, was found by my boyfriend by accident, but it remains one of my favorite songs to date.
allisone417 05-14-06, 07:11 PM Now that I know it isn't about sex I am not going to read it. Women need to know that men want their women to have incredible sex with them, and that they love them.
It may come as a shock, but we already know this. We only keep you from this incredible sex to ensure power to ourselves over you men. Its a symbiotic relationship, you give us love and we will hand over the sex willingly...only you dont love us enough. You can trick us, but in the end...

Sailing to Arcadia 05-26-06, 05:07 AM Art Brut are an absolutely incredible local band.
Lead singer Johnny Argos bascially speaks the words, over a brilliant musical background. He is blessed with sublime wit, and a knack of making a brilliant song.
"Legally Acquire" the song Formed A Band, to see what they are all about.
makeshift 06-07-06, 11:24 PM I checked out a sizable portion of your list, Roman, and have decided that Ambulance LTD is one of my favorite new bands. Swim, Ophelia and ANECDOTE are songs that are really hitting me now.

They did.
fadeaway humper 06-09-06, 05:56 AM Where'd you see them at?
In Barcelona, at the Primavera Sound Festival.
Whoa, Barcelona. They were playing in North Carolina last month, the week after I left for home.
Oh well. I got to see Wilco at my college. That was cool.
I'm going to see Foo Fighters this Sunday. :D
They're being supported by The Strokes.
Andrew Bird and Minus the Bear.
Andrew Bird whistles and plucks on a violin, and is totally indie stuff, but great.
Minus the Bear all sounds the same, but they have some good tracks.
Both have good lyrics. Lyrics that I wish I wrote.
original 08-31-06, 01:06 PM Nick Drake
Iron & Wine
Both are very talented artists that remind me of a new style of folk music, and are worth listening to at least once. If you care for my opinion on songs you might like, try Nick Drake's "Cello Song", "Three Hours", "Fruit Tree", "Saturday Sun", or "Things Behind the Sun". As for Iron & Wine, I would suggest "Naked As We Came", "Each Coming Night", "Free Until They Cut Me Down", "Sodom, South Georgia", "Woman King", or "Burn That Broken Bed".
Enjoy.
The whole album "Our Endless Numbered Days" is great, though my favorites on it are Teeth in the Grass, On Your Wings or Cinder and Smoke.
An Angry Blade and The Rooster Moans are good too, but those are on "The Creek Drank the Cradle."
Nick Drake's got some music on the Garden State soundtrack, doesn't he?
original 06-02-07, 02:22 PM Yes he does, the song "One Of These Things First".
