It was sad to hear of the passing of James Doohan. He died today of pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease. He starred as chief engineer Montgomery Scott of the starship Enterprise on the original Star Trek TV series and subsequent films. His wonderful and endearing portrayal of the miracle working Scotsman played a big role in the series success. "I cannot change the laws of physics!" and "I don't know how much longer I can handler her, captain!" were oh so familiar to us, and will go down as some of the greatest TV lines. The camaraderie between Scotty and Captain Kirk is what gave the show such great charm. He will be sorely missed. AYE CAPTAIN!
:(

That's sad. I never watched much Trek, but Scotty was always my favorite character, with Spock at close second. It is very unfortunate, and the SciFi community has lost one of the greats.

Make way for "Welshy"... (Futurama reference...)

Sorry. Yeah. It's disrespectful. Oh well.

It really is a bummer. Scotty's constant lying to the captain about the severity of the damage to the Enterprise just so that he could appear to be a miracle worker will be sorely missed.

James Doohan will forever live as Scotty in popular culture. In a way he's immortal for being a good sized part of Star Trek. A little worthless trivia here. He had his middle finger blown off in WW2, D-Day I think. He used to hide it from the camera. The guy got shot six times on that day. It is said that he's going to be cremated and scattered into space.

he is probably the most immortal of all the original trek characters. the famous "she cannot handle any more captain!" never gets old.

Scotty and Bones are beaming up and fussing at angels. Thank God for reruns and dvd's.

Ye canna change the laws of physics! RIP Chief. I understand his wish is to be "buried" in space and will be shortly.

I was shocked to learned on Coast to Coast AM with George Noory that the line "Beam me up scotty" was never accually uttered on any Star trekk episode. It was a catch fraze made up by trekkies and it just stuck. Very interesting.

One of my favorite scenes is when Scotty is trying to drink a "Kelvin" under the table and they are both totally smashed. He brings out another bottle of something and the Kelvin asks "What is it?" and Scotty replies "It's... It's... (ponders for a second)... It's GREEN!" (strong scottish roll on the 'R').

Still cracks me up.

They played homage to this scene in the Next Generation Episode [u]Relics[/i].
After being rescued from a ship wrecked on the surface of a Dyson sphere, Scotty is being shown around the ship by Data. They end up at Ten Forward where Scotty complains about the "synthanol" drink he is given. Data says that Guinian keeps some actual alcoholic beverages in stock, and pull's out a bottle from under the bar.
Scotty asks him "What is it", and Data replies "it is... (looks at the bottle), It is green."

Yes! You're right! I remember that episode now. Totally forgot about that. That was great! Ha!
