Why? It is supposedly a smart business move. Oh well, they might don't care about the users, but most likely will make money out of it...

May be a smart move, may not be. Time will tell...like Ebay purchasing Skype for ridiculous amounts of money.

Google gobbles up an established and growing membership, removes
a competitor to their own product and keeps YouTube out of any other
competitor's hands. Very smart move from a business point of view.

A bunch of it isn't their money. It's the shareholders' money.

Shareholders can sell if they want to.

The shareholders give them the rights to do whatever the hell they want with that money in exchange for the promise of dividends. They entered into the deal with their eyes wide open and, if they didn't trust Google to do things they approved of, they could have always invested with somebody else. But there is little point in worrying. If anyone can squeeze water from this stone, its Google.

From my understanding, it was an all stock purchase. I don't think they paid them anything but stock... the stock totaling 1.6billion. Is this correct or did I miss something?

Youtube is having copyright problems now, I don't know what the outcome will be. It can be a disastrous one, with lawsuits adding up to more than the company itself is worth! Youtube however as was said before in this thread is a strategic purchase, and a timely one given Google's purchasing power heh.

but in googles defense it appearently is gathering a legal team thats going to take care of youtuves copyright problems so the google stock is in thier hands.

LOL, I think Google is moving into markets that will eventually cause it some trouble. The company is afterall only a search engine, it's not exactly rocket bill if you catch my meaning. When they buy YouTube say goodbye to the strip teases from young girls you can find on it, say goodbye to music videos.. come to think of it isn't everything on YouTube illegal except home videos?!

If you get rid of the freaky and perverse parts of YouTube, there is no doubt in my mind that someone somewhere would open up an analog of the service to serve the mutants of the world. As long as the demand is there, there will always be a supply. Of anything.

Guess they will merge google video with youtube. I am not saying the youtube concept isn't\wasn't ingenious, I would say it's like damn why didn't I think of that?

I actually thought BeOs was gonna rival MS, actually i saw it to be more like OSX. I used Google for 6 years without even realizing what it was. Come to think of it I though RealMedia was going to take over streaming media.
