View Full Version : If you could have a super power ... what would it be?
The Singularity 05-24-04, 03:25 PM I saw this post on another forum and I don't now if something like this was ever talked about here ... so I thought it would be interesting to post one here to see the kind of responses given.
Basically select one super power and explain why you would want it.
NOTE: There are a few powers I forgot to add to the list. Vote for one of the powers listed above that you would like to have out of the list and if there is a better power you like to have that is not listed above ... then mention it as an "Other" along with the one you voted for as well.
Dreamwalker 05-24-04, 03:27 PM Dude, i would stop double posting.
jadedflower 05-24-04, 03:27 PM I'd like to fly.
Why?
CAUSE ITS SO COOL!
greywolf 05-24-04, 03:34 PM i would want complete control of the elements if not all then the 4 basics (earth, fire, wind, water)
With that power the possibilities would be endless!
Dreamwalker 05-24-04, 03:34 PM I do not need a superpower, I have got WESdom :D
seriously:
I echo greywolf
greywolf 05-24-04, 03:36 PM which is what exactly ? :bugeye:
Dreamwalker 05-24-04, 03:39 PM Which is what? what do you mean?
WESdom?
WE are WES, haven´t you heard. We(s) are the ultimate collective.
Anyway, I have voted now. I too want to have control over the elements. Surely a cool skill.
greywolf 05-24-04, 03:44 PM lol. WESdom. hmmm....
Blazin_billy 05-24-04, 03:49 PM Fly all the way. Imagine flying high, then divebombing and taking in all the thrills of a rollar coaster and skydiving at the same time. No car is needed, you can fly to work, which means no traffic jams. Imagine all the woman who would want you! Thier are unlimited possibilities!
The Singularity 05-24-04, 04:13 PM Personally, I'm leaning towards telekinesis. Just think of it, being able to move inanimate objects would be nice to have. Granted, it would be the ultimate gift for lazy people since having telekinesis would promote more laziness for them (making an entire sandwich on the comforts of your own couch does sound tempting) ... but I'd rather use that power in a more constructive matter (like controlling the trajectory of my basketball shots so that all of them score no matter the situation or position I'm in. Then again that would be cheating but who would know. :) )
I'm also leaning towards controlling the elements but it's a close second place
Dreamwalker 05-24-04, 04:15 PM If you controll the elements you could also alter the flight of a ball with a small gust of wind. You could perhaps even make a sandwich with wind (if you are skilled) and with fire you can toast it if you feel like it. ;)
The Singularity 05-24-04, 04:22 PM That's more like indirect control. You would be controlling everything that surrounds or interacts with the object but you wouldn't necessarily get the desired affect.
You still have to get the sandwich to you .... and using the wind to make the sandwich can get very messy. It requires too much precision. Telekinesis eliminates that by allowing complete and direct control over the object without worrying if you've used too much wind speed to get that tomato out of the fridge.
And the last time i checked ... the wind couldn't open a fridge door unless you use tornado force winds ... and that can result in other misfortunes
Dreamwalker 05-24-04, 04:24 PM But there is air in the refrigerator, if you make wind within, it will open I suppose.
But you are right, telekinesis is not bad either.
The Singularity 05-24-04, 04:40 PM I thought of a better way of looking of looking at this:
Imagine a jar of pickles. Now there is two ways of opening it ... using telekinesis and using the elements of nature.
By using the elements of nature to open it, you would be similar to a caveman. You would burn it, throw it about, toss it into water, blow air on it, things that is indirect. Eventually, you'll end up opening it ... by breaking the jar open. Granted it's open but there's a complete mess about.
By using telekinesis, it would be like modern man opening the jar with its hands. It's direct and there's no mess.
But don't mistaken me. I respect you're view and I too would like to control the forces of nature. It sounds cool. But it would be for a different reason then wanting to be telekinetic to control inanimate objects. Though I have to admit ... making toast with fire is more efficient then using you're mind to put the bread in the toaster.
I don't know, it'd have to be a toss-up between invisibility and teleportation. But hey, Professor Xavier is pretty good with his telepathy. For any reason I may want to go invisible or teleport, I could just blank out everyone's mind or have them fly me around in a personal jet. So hmm, maybe that. :p
- N
I'd be invisible...that way I can fight crime in cool places...like the female showers...
Also, I could get into some wicked sick concerts and slap some people I hate.
cosmictraveler 05-24-04, 05:23 PM I saw this post on another forum and I don't now if something like this was ever talked about here ... so I thought it would be interesting to post one here to see the kind of responses given.
Basically select one super power and explain why you would want it.
The ability to heal others whether they be physically injured or mentally handicaped.
jadedflower 05-24-04, 06:55 PM All you Telekenesis people are just lazy... unless you've no hands/legs/and what not...
plus; you've forgotten an "other" option for things like necromancy and devination...
Dreamwalker 05-24-04, 06:57 PM You don´t need superpowers for necromancy. It is simple magic, everyone can do it. ;)
We are wes, wes is we, join us,We are wes, wes is we, join us,We are wes, wes is we, join us,We are wes, wes is we, join us,We are wes, wes is we, join us,We are wes, wes is we, join us,We are wes, wes is we, join us,We are wes, wes is we, join us,We are wes, wes is we, join us,We are wes, wes is we, join us,We are wes, wes is we, join us,We are wes, wes is we, join us,We are wes, wes is we, join us,We are wes, wes is we, join us,We are wes, wes is we, join us,We are wes, wes is we, join us,
SkippingStones 05-24-04, 07:04 PM I me and my significant other/wife were telepathic that'd be very cool.
Closet Philosopher 05-24-04, 07:54 PM I would want telepathy if I coule read the minds of others without them knowing and extract all information from them.

I know I forgot to add the "other" option to the list. I only realized it after about a few seconds after posting it. I would add it to the list but I don't think I can edit it. However, if there are people who doesn't see a power, which they like, on the list ... then they can mention it as an "other".
Also I forgot to add Invinsibility and the ability to heal others.
invert_nexus 05-24-04, 10:06 PM I'd want the power to have any power I want. :p
But, I guess that's not too realistic. I'd have to say energy manipulation. Being able to transform one form of energy into another form of energy. Colossus's brother in the x-men had this ability. Basically, he was able to do almost anything he wanted. We are all made of energy after all. I remember one drastic thing he did was transform ice-man into a full-on ice man instead of just a coating of ice. He was all gnarly with spikes and everything. Then, he got changed back. I think he regained this form later on his own. The character was too powerful and was killed later on. He was a troubled kind of guy.
regeneratation. I study martial arts and healing seems to take longer in my 30's...seems like a practical super power......thor..about your invisablity in womans showers...bud i hate to break the news to you ..but they would be able to hear you panting......
So no-one else wants to be invisible? No-one else? Just think of what you can do!
Baal Zebul 05-25-04, 02:23 AM Telekenisis!
Looks like i am on the winning super-power side
SwedishFish 05-25-04, 07:35 AM telepathy hands down. but then people won't trust me if i can read their thoughts. that might be a double edged sword too. maybe i don't want any powers. i can already breath under water, being a fish and all. controlling water would be awesome. morphing would be hella cool too.
RawThinkTank 05-25-04, 07:37 AM Ability to time travel
invert_nexus 05-25-04, 07:55 AM Invisibility? Easily available through energy manipulation.
Telekinesis? Easily available through energy manipulation.
Time travel? Easily available through energy manipulation.
Telepathy? You get the idea...
All things are possible through energy manipulation. It would merely take practice to hone the skills.
Captain_Crunch 05-25-04, 08:03 AM Invincibility like Superman.
invert_nexus 05-25-04, 08:08 AM I've always like the wish mentality of D&D, beware a poorly worded wish. Invincibility, you say? Ok, you're now made of a superstrong alloy that can never be damaged in any way, unfortunately you no longer move, think, breathe, age, etc... :p
Logically Unsound 05-25-04, 08:12 AM not exactly time travel, but the ability to control time. slightly underrated i feel as a superpower, but i would frankly kick the hell out of / do whatever i want if i could control time
see: theif of time by terry pratchett- history monks.
like them, except better, and with the ability to grow hair. (doesnt count as a superpower).
out of the above......id go for regeneration or flight, cause regeneration means i can live forever (my lifelong dream) and flight would just kick ass and you alll know why.
Captain_Crunch 05-25-04, 10:35 AM I've always like the wish mentality of D&D, beware a poorly worded wish. Invincibility, you say? Ok, you're now made of a superstrong alloy that can never be damaged in any way, unfortunately you no longer move, think, breathe, age, etc... :p
I said like Superman, he did move and breathe. We all know that superman didnt age. He only had these powers because he came to earth, back in Krypton where there was alot of kryptonite he was just like a human.
I dont get why superman would age until he was in his 20's but then after he wouldnt - according to the Adventures of Superman tv show. That always struck me as being weird.
:D
Logically Unsound 05-25-04, 10:36 AM you age into the fullness of adulthood as according to your DNA, but since you dont age you stop there. :)
Captain_Crunch 05-25-04, 10:38 AM Your nose and ears continue to grow though.
Blandnuts 05-25-04, 10:39 AM I reckon I could sufice with just having a super power where I understand everything and nothing. ;)
If you watched Smallville you'll know that Superman developed his powers near the end of puberty. That would mean that he would stop ageing at the end of puberty.
Captain_Crunch 05-25-04, 10:48 AM Then there is conflicting information then, in The adventures of Superman, they said that because of the lack of Kryptonite made superman super and he had all his powers throughout his life. So in smallville they say he only got his powers at the end of puberty but why would he turn super all of a sudden if there was never any krytonite in the landscape, shouldnt he always be super?
We need someone who read the marvel comics to know the actual real story of superman I reckon, these programs are just money spinners of the original superman.
Actually...the meteor storm that brought him to Smallville actually had Kryptonite in it...this Kryptonite also made Lex Luther bald. So Kryptonie IS in the landscape.
invert_nexus 05-25-04, 11:00 AM I said like Superman, he did move and breathe.
True, I thought of that after I posted, but figured I'd wait for you to respond. Ok, you are now a two-dimensional comic book man. No one can rip you apart though. Super strong paper. :p
Your nose and ears continue to grow though.
I think that all your cartilage grows your entire life.
If you watched Smallville you'll know that Superman developed his powers near the end of puberty.
Ah, but in the movie he lifted a car while still a babe. And in the comic books (the real source) he was super boy. I never really read them though. I never liked DC comics. Marvel was the shit, until the independents came along.
this Kryptonite also made Lex Luther bald.
That one I know is wrong. Luthor lost his hair in some experiment gone wrong. He blamed superman for it, actually superboy I think. And if Kryptonite was the reason he didn't have powers until puberty, every time he went to Smallville he would become wimpy clark kent. No powers.
greywolf 05-25-04, 11:05 AM superman was born with superpowers (comic) and these powers just got more powerful as he grew older his powers grew also
vodooeconomist 05-25-04, 02:14 PM At first, I thought you meant a super-power like the US or Russia... Then I picked teleportation.
Still only one for invisibility?! Ye gads people!
Logically Unsound 05-25-04, 02:40 PM yeah, invisibility aint all its cracked up to be, ill expain is you want.
Dreamwalker 05-25-04, 02:42 PM Sometimes I think unsound is a dislexic
What if he is...won't you feel uncomfortable
Dreamwalker 05-25-04, 02:48 PM Nope!
I would not. Cuz i´m an evil bastard!
Logically Unsound 05-25-04, 02:51 PM no i am just crack at typing.
okkkkk
- flight/levitation. if you can fly out of harms way, while this aint a substitute for invisibility it is pretty close. ish.
- super speed. as proved by the flash, you can run so fast that you become invisible, cause light rays dont hit you etc.
- X-ray vision. if you can see them coming, why need invisibility?
- telepathy. pretty similar to X-ray vision, but you could black out your body from the minds of people so they just dont see you.
- telekinesis. dunno bout his, but i suppose you could move yourself i.e. levitate alá see flying, or you could move the electrical signals in peoples brains so they dont see you... hmmmm maybe.
- regeneration. ok you win on that one but pros outweigh the cons here.
- strength, breath under water controlling elements, see above, you win.
- shape shift. you could make yourself the same as the wall alá t1000 in terminator 2.
- ability to pass through walls. if you can change your composition so walls become as air, cant you change your composition so light will pass through.
- teleporation. constantly teleport so you are never in one place long enough to be seen.
there. thats all of them.
im not dyslexic.
But think of the things you could see!!
Logically Unsound 05-25-04, 02:54 PM looking above at my post for example, pretty much the same for a lot of them.
Dreamwalker 05-25-04, 02:56 PM ok, I acknowledge you are not dislexic. Sorry
Logically Unsound 05-25-04, 02:57 PM is it dislexic or dyslexic?
303030303030303030303030
Dreamwalker 05-25-04, 02:59 PM how should I know? I am a native German.
Dictionary says "dyslexic"
Logically Unsound 05-25-04, 03:01 PM woohooo i am right
30303030303030303030303030303030
Dreamwalker 05-25-04, 03:02 PM Well, not much chance of being wrong 50:50
Logically Unsound 05-25-04, 03:03 PM hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe hehehehehehehehehehehe
sorry i got stuck
spidergoat 05-25-04, 03:16 PM I would want the power to control minds. This would be different than telepathy, although that could be a part of it. You could walk into a bank and take anything you wanted, just by deleting the perception of you in other's minds. Or, you could erase memories, add them, or prevent them from being formed in the first place. Or you could generate fear, love, or any other emotion, or prevent thought from occuring at all. I don't think this would even break any laws of physics.
How about being a jedi...that would be freakin' sweet and would appease spidergoat
Logically Unsound 05-25-04, 03:53 PM thats technically several powers, so probably not allowed here
however, to see a jedi in action weve got wolverine vs Kun in the 'best superhero ever' thread in free thought. come watch.
Jedi's or Jedii are superheroes or supervillans...but to be a Jedi would be an awesome thing to be
Logically Unsound 05-25-04, 03:59 PM ja

Being 2D wouldnt be so bad, if anyone tryed to shoot at you all you would have to do is turn side on and you could slip under doors and stuff.
Ah, but in the movie he lifted a car while still a baby. And in the comic books (the real source) he was super boy. I never really read them though. I never liked DC comics. Marvel was the shit, until the independents came along.
See, told you Thor! :p
That one I know is wrong. Luthor lost his hair in some experiment gone wrong. He blamed superman for it, actually superboy I think. And if Kryptonite was the reason he didn't have powers until puberty, every time he went to Smallville he would become wimpy clark kent. No powers.
yeh, thats true.
Who would win between Superman vs The Silver surfer as they are totalleee indestuctible. Where superman can fly, the Silver surfer can surf faster than the speed of light.

Closet Philosopher 05-25-04, 07:11 PM imagine if you can enter anyone's mind.
You could cheat on tests.
Know of somebody is telling the truth.
Bargain (you know how low they will go).
Know how to get promoted.
Say what people want to hear to get ahead.
If you can extract knowledge, then you can learn any instrument, or learn anything.
Know the best ways to insult someone you don't like.
Know of someone have a disease before you fuck them :)
Know how much someone can tolerate.
Know if somebady likes you from across the room.
The possibilities are endless.
Dreamwalker 05-25-04, 07:14 PM That is true.
I wish I could alter my vote :(

I have to admit myself ... that sounds better then telekenesis. But entering someone else's mind won't get you a sandwich made from the comforts of a lawn chair in your back yard. :p
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 04:03 AM you could control someone elses mind and they woud get it for you.
Baal Zebul 05-26-04, 05:12 AM Dreamwalker, why just not learn some Focus Transfer ?
Ain't the same but it is the closest you can get
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 05:13 AM what???????????????
says the people.
Baal Zebul 05-26-04, 05:14 AM ?
was that meant for me?
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 05:15 AM Of course it was, it is his normal way of posing a question.
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 05:15 AM for EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3030303030303030303030303030303003030
Baal Zebul 05-26-04, 05:16 AM :)
why not add a extra super power for Unsound. "The ability to make no sense"
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 05:16 AM I think I will rely on rethoric to convince people. Much easier than training any superpowers or such things.
Baal Zebul 05-26-04, 05:17 AM Focus Transfer!
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 05:17 AM He already got that superpower baal. :D
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 05:17 AM meh, i still want to control time.
303030303030303030303030303030
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 05:18 AM Well, I can look into it. Look my 666 posts. Hehe :p
Baal Zebul 05-26-04, 05:18 AM :)
Mod: "The ability to Over Time make no sense at all"
Are you happy then Unsound?
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 05:18 AM look at my 200 posts in 24 hourse :D
:p
Baal Zebul 05-26-04, 05:19 AM wow, small annoying posts!
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 05:19 AM The more you talk the fewer people you can listen to. ;)
Baal Zebul 05-26-04, 05:20 AM this is almost like a chat :)
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 05:21 AM actually they mainly come from my anti-wess posts.
so whats this focus transfer thing?
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 05:21 AM That is true.
I think I should stop
posting these one liners.
Otherwise I may drop down
to Unsounds level on conversation.
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 05:21 AM heyhey dont get all nasty.
Baal Zebul 05-26-04, 05:22 AM You believe in one thing, and make the one you are talking to believe it to.
Instead of answering questions you transfer what you want someone to ask you.
Etc, Etc,
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 05:22 AM See, you are doing it again.
No wonder you always got
problems with that 30
seconds posting limitation.
Baal Zebul 05-26-04, 05:22 AM :) That is true Dreamwalker. Maybe we could stand strong together and dont post ! Nah, that is just boring
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 05:23 AM meh, thats not a great power.
i think telepahy is the best on the board.
i did vote for flying but surely if your telepathic you could make the ebtire universe think your flying, and then you technically are...
Baal Zebul 05-26-04, 05:23 AM it is not a super-power, it is a real power.
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 05:23 AM I am not opposed to a fast conversation,
I just do not like to use this as
a chatroom.
Baal Zebul 05-26-04, 05:25 AM i would say "agree" but that would be somewhat paradoxal
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 05:25 AM Somehow it sucks to submit the posts at
the same moment. It provokes too much
writing of small messages.
Baal Zebul 05-26-04, 05:26 AM lets swap thread then :) perhaps mine ? ? ?
Godless 05-26-04, 08:01 PM Well I didn't vote, the only super-power I would like is not listed:
I would like to crap gold!.
I'd be paid extremely well after eating refried beans with mole!!
:) LOL...
Godless.
The Singularity 05-26-04, 10:03 PM Crap Gold? That's gotta to be painful ... no matter how large it is when it comes out. And I presume the gas that comes out is gold as well ... in it's gaseous form. lol :p
Logically Unsound 05-27-04, 03:57 AM would you piss liquid gold as well.
actually, you probably wouldnt make a profit, cause whenever you take a piss in a public restroom your gonna get sued for wrecking their toilets.
