It's also widely known that americans are generally pretty stereotyped. Which is strange since the US population is comprised of people from every possible nationality in the world. You see what you want to see and that goes for everyone.

Afraid I know very few such people in the US then. I've met a couple in Norway too! Do you think they are actually escaped americans or is it possible that the attitude you describe can exist anywhere?
Duh...they're still all Americans. There are good reasons for stereotypes, which doesn't mean that each and every American or US citizen is necessarily painted in the same colours, but the stereotype is the sort that projects a general picture to the rest of the world, and we have enough pictures from America to fill 1000 albums.
