Anyway, I have a shitload of clothes I have to go through so I know what to keep. Same with a lot of the other stuff that I recovered from the floor of my room.

I'd like to hear ideas for organizing my room so that all my stuff is neatly tucked away somewhere.

Here are a few things about my room: It has no end tables, dressers, or stand-alone shelves. I have a large closet that has shelves in it, but I think they're built more for clothes than for books, because it's a little over half a meter between the front of the closet and the back wall. It's a small room; I estimate it to be four meters long, three wide. I don't keep the computer in it. The only piece of furniture is my bed. I think it's either queen- or king-sized (I don't know why).

If you have a scheme to your room, or even just specific ideas, I'd like to hear them. And ask questions if you need to. Thanks in advance. :D

a scheme i use is a fishnet.
buy a fishnet and either nail it in a corner or, if it's big enough, cover the entire ceiling with it. suspend it about a foot or foot and a half from the ceiling put all you spare stuff in it.

about 18 inches below that run a 6 inch shelf around the room for your books, dvd's, vhs tapes and other stuff.

Hey, does anyone have ideas for what I can do with my Rolling Stone mags? Is there a special way of storing magazines so they don't get damaged, especially these ones?

Go to Ikea. They have lots of storage idea's, even if you cant buy it the ideas are there. Build a book case or refinish an old dresser. Personally I like doors on my shelves so I can close off the clutter.

You chose to make this room your bedroom. There's no law saying you can't make that room the parlor and sleep in another room. It's your house, organize it any way that makes you comfortable.

My wife and I for many years used what was supposed to be the "family room," an 18x20ft converted garage, as our bedroom. That way we could have the stereo and the TV. Had to have a couple of easy chairs to watch TV when awake. A couple more in case we had company over to watch a movie or "Fraggle Rock." A nice coffee table so we could eat while we watched TV. We eventually moved in a desk and a bunch of other stuff and it became the place where we spent most of our time.

We know other people who have done the same thing, built a one-room studio inside their own house.

If this configuration isn't working, change it!

There's no magic trick for storing magazines. You have to be excruciatingly careful to keep them from getting folded and torn. Getting a sturdy plastic bag for each one that is exactly the right size would be perfect. Of course you have to keep them dry, too much humidity will ruin them. Is "Rolling Stone" printed on newsprint? That's dirt-cheap paper not designed for longevity. It will turn yellow if you're not careful. Libraries know how to keep old newspapers in decent shape so you should check with your local librarian. You have to devote more space to them than you expect, that's one of the tricks. I think if you stuff them together you're asking for trouble. If it's real magazine stock you'll have better luck.

just stack them onto a shelf, ive got every national geographic since 1975 stuffed onto about 3 shelves. the are packed together well enough that they cant oxidise :P

I think I'll look for those. Should they be ziplock bags, or will most any kind of clear, sturdy plastic lining work?

Often things are catalogued as... 'being dealt with in the morning'. "which morning" it refered to I can't actually remember, considering that remembering it should be dealt with was obviously something that was forgotten.

However still from my hovel, I have realised that perhaps "Materialism" isn't what it's cracked up to be and those things that get hoarded with the good intention of perhaps using that piece of cable or extra circuit board the next time I jury-rig something really should give way to an uncluttered minimist regime where order is pronounced by catalogued cleanliness.

I have to admit however that for order to triumph I'll probably need a female foot up my backside to address my lapse of memory or concentration.
