Recent White House talking-points echoed by General Petraeus assert that "Special Groups" and other spoilers from Iran are subverting our victorious efforts at friendly nation-building in Iraq. What is to be done about them is left dangling. Blaming Iran's influence among the Shi'a of the Persian Gulf region for present perils is like blaming gravity. It was completely apparent to those with a basic understanding of the region since before the toppling of Saddam Hussein's Sunni-dominated regime, that Iran would reap a windfall of influence should Shi'a of the region become politically empowered. For the neoconservatives and their defenders to assert that our mission in Iraq is now become the containment of Iran is as manipulative and disingenuous as the original WMD ruse that produced Iran's windfall. As the blowback from this serial manipulation of US fears cascades further, and for as long as USAmerican opinion caves to deception, this spectacle will continue to resemble an old children's song:
