Specifically I want to shoot THE black bear that keeps trying to kill me.

I swear this b!tch has it in for me. She stalked me for miles! She keeps scratching at the door of my uncle's house at night. He shot her with his Winchester model 12 like THREE TIMES on THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. So all you animal-rights activists can shut up, because she clearly poses a major threat.

Any hunters here who've ever bagged themselves a black bear? Any advice? Sould I use the Winchester model 12 (12-gauge shotgun) or the Winchester model 1886 (.45-70 rifle)?

Best course of action for you would be to go out, pepper her indiscriminately with a BB gun, and then stay right where you are and wait for her to come to you.

Animal rights activists are so annoying...you put the life of a bear over the safety of several humans? We'll see what happens when a black bear scratches at the door of someone close to you.

So you changed your sig after the Canadiens got their asses whooped? You no longer want Theodore to marry you after he gave up like 14 goals in two games?

    No, I still love him.

Season's over so I figured I'd get rid of the Canadiens sig. It was too painful for me to look at.

Anyhow it wasn't his fault. There was no one out there protecting him. And the coach sucks.

We did good. We did better than we ever could have dreamed. We're proud of our Habs.

If your serious about not knowing what an anvil is, well Northwind's Avatar is what one looks like.
It's used by some types of metalurgists (okay just a metal worker), people like some forms of jewelers and most notibly blacksmiths.

A metal can be hammered will hot (notibly red/yellow hot) to various shapes. In fact hammering something that is facing in a direction of a magnetic pole, can actually make it magnetic.

I once considered how the legendary "Excalibur" sword could have been hammered in the direction of north, to make it magnetic, so when it was swung at someone wearing armour it would increase the gravity of impact. (Of course thats straying from anvils)

I'm sure Northwind could drop one in to show you.

I'm pretty certain that she was kidding, but thanks for the interesting info.

I like the idea about Excalibur, but wouldn't it also be kind of difficult to control in the middle of battle? What with it waving everywhere in the direction of every armored guy on the battlefield? Ol' Arthur must have had a strong arm!

    Mallory Knox,

From your post I gather you are in an isolated place. I have seen some of the things bears do when they become to familar with humans and lose their fear of them. Not pretty. I have been stalked by panther in Florida while hunting (Having a bait of squirrels did nothing to help the problem). I have seen what black bears can do when I lived near the Smokey Mountains and have even walked up close to one before I knew it was in the area. (Too close for comfort, especially considering she had a cub with her at the time)

My advice to you is the very animal lovers that you have a problem with in this case. Seek out the wildlife folks and tell them of your problem. It is not unheard of for grizzly's to do this sort of thing. It is more uncommon for black bears to do it (I should say it is rare for them to do this). They should sent a team to put it to sleep and remove it from the area. Make certain that they understand that you are in fear for your life and if they will not act that you will be forced to.

Barring that, you best make sure if you shoot it that you get it dead the first shot. If you do not, chances are good that it will leave for a while. Sooner or later it will be back and it will remember, rest assured. If chances are not good it will come see you, then.

I have no problem with disagreements on the board but please reserve the name calling for other times.

Xev was Zev before she turned into jello. So the name is easily confused. Zev is prettier though.

I know some predatory animals will satlk humans just like any other meat. The same happened with a diver and a shark recently here. The shark kept this guy trapped under a shelf for a while, waiting. But do such animals stalk humans over an extended period? Well, anyone ever heard that story the film Ghost And The Darkness was based on? I don't know. I've never seen such a thing myself.

As for shooting, well... I would prefer it if we humans did not live in areas where bears and such should be free to live as they wish. But that doesn't seem likely. I know that if I suspected a bear nearby wanted my guts for breakfast, I would carry a gun. Actually, if possible, two guns. I would like, if the tiome was available in any confrontation, to sting it and chase it off with some birdshot. However, if in actual danger and desperate and all, I would love to have something powerful. An L1A1, a S&W Model 29 with the long barrel, something like that. Probably the L1A1, my favourite rifle.

Lugers look very cool, but they jam. With that weird-arse ejection mechanism, cartridges tend to get jamemd in the top.
