Is anyone familiar with the "which state is Springfield in? I've solved it! Maybe...

The Simpson family lives in Springfield, OHIO. Here is the evidence...

1. In the episode where George Bush Sr. moves next door to the Simpsons, Lisa remarks that "this state is one of the states in which Mr. Bush claims residency", or something like that. Although he wasn't born there, Bush had many connections to Ohio (his father, Prescott, was a native of Ohio and seemed to always gravitate towards that state).

2. I don't remember which episode it was, or what was happening. But I remember Marge was ranting something about how great Springfield was. As she got to the climax of her rant, she says something like "I'm proud to live in Sprinfield-" at which point someone totally irrelevant to the scene appears (let's just say for argument it's Ned). She suddenly says an awkwardly pronounced "oh, hiya ned", IMMEDIATELY after saying Springfield, so it came out as "I'm proud to live in Springfield Oh Hiya Ned." and the scence abruptly ends. I think it's a sign!

3. Taken from The Simpson's Archive (http://www.snpp.com):

``Bart the Murderer'' seems to indicate that the
Simpsons' home state (1) has capital punishment and (2)
is by electrocution. States that do are Alabama,
Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky,
Nebraska, Ohio , South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Although that doesn't rule out the possible other states, it is evidence that Ohio is an educated guess.

4. They managed to drive to Detroit MI in a week. Since Ohio borders MI, that might not have been that hard.

Of course, this is all in fun. Does anyone have any ideas where Springfield may be? Check out http://www.snpp.com/guides/springfield.list.html for some info :D .

I always thought that Springfield was in Oregon or some other Pacific Coast state, because they are obviously by the sea, and when Homer does the war games and goes on a Sub, they go to Russia, (well, that way anyway).

I guess any state from: Washington, Oregon or California. However, i am British, and my knowledge of american states is appaling!!

Ohio? Maybe. It was maude. She said "springfield, - oh hiya maude!" and she just walks in for no reason. Though i think they are on the east coast, remember the NSYNC episode? With the boy band? They traveled by boat to New York City very quickly. Then again there are many such clues like this, all contradictory to one another. Like when they drove to vegas, florida....other places.

I dont think they will ever tell us for sure. But then again, the state doesnt really matter. Does it? Nah

Springfield is supposed to be fictional. I know there's a Springfield in Illinios and other states, but I truly think its supposed to be fictional. It does have outside influences such as other Springfields.

Also, the capital of the state its in is called 'The Windy Apple' so go figure

There's a springfield in just about every state, and thats probally why the name was chosen so that it could be conviently be relocated whenver it suitst the plot. But i really have no clue and am just guessing. ;)

Actually, now that I think of it...

Remeber when they took that holiday and went to the 5 state border? That's not in the US, is it....

On that page it said Springfield is the 2nd most common city name....the #1 most common city name is Fairview, which is where I'm from :( ........

My candidate is Springfield, Kentucky.

Why? It was the first location offered in the Behind the Laughter parody episode. Subsequent episodes offer other locations. One of the first places I recall them setting this precedent was in the "Super Bowl" episode when Homer, Mo, and the guys at the bar talk about their Super Bowl hopefuls; whenever one says a team name, they pause, raise their glass in front of their mouth, and say the words. It's a deliberate trick to allow them to change the number of syllables spoken without messing up the animation, so that the episode can be relevant to whatever teams are actually in the Super Bowl. Likewise with this "northern Kentucky family", which words were spoken by a narrator, and not by a character onscreen; they frequently change where the family is from.

However, Springfield is in northern Kentucky, and approximately fifty miles northeast (I think it's northeast) you'll find Shelbyville, Kentucky.

Other candidates include Springfield, Oregon. Groening spent some time in Sweet Home, Oregon, which is near both Springfield and Albany. I remember an episode in which Milhouse fell in love with the new girl who complained about the queer smell in Springfield, which put me in mind of a combination of a wood-products plant in Albany and also the amount of methamphetamine being manufactured in Oregon; both processes smell awful. (The nuclear plant would be Trojan, now closed, near Kalama, Washington). Krusty the Klown, incidentally, is J.P. Patches (http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Dugout/8867/JP.html), a TV clown who entertained children in Seattle, at least, and I don't know where else. (I believe it is on Soundgarden's Badmotorvision video that JP introduces the band.) The amount of the Pacific Northwest evident in The Simpsons makes Springfield, Oregon, my first choice for where Springfield actually is. The people in Springfield, Oregon have occasionally been as dimwitted as the people on the show, and there is a planetarium and observatory (Lisa's date with density) only a few minutes away in Eugene, Oregon.

Nonetheless, I think the point is that Springfield is any town of any name. It occurs, allegedly, in all fifty states, but there is a website (http://www.sfytech.com/findspringfield.html) that tells why Springfield cannot be in this or that state in The Simpsons. Its two cents on Springfield, Oregon: In The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace(5F21), Homer and Bart are driving to the Thomas Edison museum. On the way, they pass a sign that says, EXIT. New Jersey, Michigan, Oregon, and Texas then there is a big arrow on the sign that points to the road that they take. So Springfield is not in any of those states if they are driving away from Springfield and the arrow is pointing in the direction they are drivingAccording to the website, Springfield, Kentucky has not yet been ruled out.

two cents,
Tiassa

Here are 2 strong arguments that the Simpsons actually don't reside in any state.

1)Half-Decent proposal: Homer gets a job in West Springfield which is three times the size of Texas. How can a town be larger than the 2nd largest state.

2)A Tale of Two Springfields: Their area code (636) is an actual code for Missouri.
2.1)While Missouri may seem like a probable choice, you may recall from "Lisa gets an A" that "Springfield Elementary was voted the most delapatated in all of Missouri, so it was moved here brick by brick".
2.2)The second area code that Springfield gets is 939. This is an area code for Puerto Rico. Obviously they don't live in Puerto Rico

So it is in my opinion that they purposely left it ambiguous so they can make it where they need it to be when it's convenient.

. They managed to drive to Detroit MI in a week

It only takes a day from here. (Louisville, Kentucky)

Your correct.

One argument i forgot to bring up was Homer's drivers license in Duffless. His address is listed as 742 Evergreen Terrace, NT. NT is not an actual state, but is instead the postal abbreviation for the Norther Territory of Australia. But they cannot live in Australia because of countless American references as well as the Episode Bart vs Australia and the long distance charges.

Well that's the point duh!!!!...they don't live in any state and they live in all states...as somebody mentioned almost every state has a springfield named town. They just move around the show to suit their needs and keep people wondering what state they are in and to start threads like these that leaves people with their head scratching thinking "huh...i thought they were in Ny near the water so how come they got a dessert here"
