View Full Version : I'm A Zulu
DNA experts have questioned Oprah Winfrey's belief that she is a member of South Africa's Zulu nation.
The African-American chat-show host announced during a recent visit to South Africa that she had had a DNA test that had shown her to be a Zulu.
"I'm crazy about the South African accent," she said. "I wish I had been born here."

If she is or not is really irrelevant to her accent. I don't think theres much of a difference between zulus and neighbouring tribes.
spidergoat 06-15-05, 04:47 PM Yes, I'm from Africa, too.
Fraggle Rocker 06-15-05, 07:49 PM If she is or not is really irrelevant to her accent. I don't think theres much of a difference between zulus and neighbouring tribes. There are a great many different families of ethnic groups in Africa and several language families. Of course I know that we're all distant cousins and the most recent research leans toward the conclusion that all of our languages are related. Nonetheless you have to go back tens of thousands of years to find the relations.
The various African tribes are not so closely related. After the British and the other colonial powers got done moving people around and drawing artificial boundaries to define "nations" that are only figments of their imagination, it's quite likely that some neighboring tribes are not closely related.
That's certainly true in North America. The Cherokee were forcibly relocated from Florida. They're not close relatives of the other tribes in Texas and Oklahoma.
Of course it's doubtful that Oprah has much of a trace of her ancestors' linguistic identity. It usually doesn't take more than four generations to completely obliterate a person's linguistic heritage unless their family has kept the ancestral language alive in the household. Most slaveholders in the Americas deliberately separated families and made Africans from different tribes live and work together, forcing them to communicate in the conqueror's languages and making it almost impossible to keep any cultural heritage alive.
That said, there actually are a few places in the U.S. where African language roots can be detected because by accidents of history many people from the same tribes lived together. It's usually on an island. I've never heard of the Zulu being one of them, but who knows.

Lol she is an african-american, her ancestry is from west africa, not south africa. She might be more accurate saying she is yoruba or ashanti, not zulu.
Though zulus are cool lol ,swingin swords like conan an shit, old school stlye.

That doesnt necessarily mean her ancestry is only that of a west african tribe. Previous to movement to america, her ancestors could've been from/come from/moved from anywhere.
Though to be honest it seems like a bit of wishing to be something you arent, because it looks good, disease.

I wish the bitch had been born there, too!!! ...then she'd be living in poverty and disease just like the rest of her "ancestors" and not making such idiotic statements on tv!! As it is, she was born in America, the greatest nation on Earth, and is now a gazillion-aire with more money than most African nations. ......and she wishes she'd been born in Africa? ....LOL!!! Sure, bitch, sure you do!

spidergoat 06-27-05, 01:50 PM Maybe she just wants to be able to stick a spear into a slave master. Oprah would have been rich anywhere, a queen in Africa, or daytime talkshow queen in the states, that's just the kind of person she is.
Baron Max 06-27-05, 08:52 PM Oprah would have been rich anywhere, a queen in Africa, ....
Yeah, maybe ....but a queen of what? ...poverty stricken, starving, disease-ridden, naked, skin-n'-bone subjects? That kinda' queen??

Hapsburg 06-28-05, 07:48 AM She's a Zulu? Cool, the Zulu's kicked ass, at least until the Brits got there with thier guns.

Zuluz were neither naked, poor, nor starving, they had vast holdings of cattle. Maybe they got diseases, but so did any white people that came by. At least they probably had their own folk medicine.

And the operative word there is "were" ...as in past tense! If Oprah had been born a Zulu and was NOW their queen, what would she be the queen of?
And lest we forget, that is what the topic is all about, right? NOT about how great the Zulu were in the past!

spidergoat 06-28-05, 02:08 PM Maybe Oprah would unite the Zulus and with her great wealth, public relations and marketing savvy rekindle their original glory.

Ye're missing the entire point! Where the fuck is she going to get that wealth if she were born there in this day and time? The Zulus are nothing now ....perhaps even less than nothing. Where would Oprah find any great wealth if she'd been born a Zulu? That's the question!

Why do you bother writing your name at the bottom of your posts, when clearly it has already appeared at the top?
Are you a Narcissist?
Ophiolite 06-29-05, 03:12 AM If so he must be short sighted.

Not all ex-slaves are from West Africa, some people on my father's side of the family were Jamaican slaves (though I'm not sure who, but it's safe to say some) and my father had a genetic test that revealed his ancestory is from Central Africa.
Also, I doubt the Ashanti came to America as slaves, they were the ones that enslaved the other Africans.
