spuriousmonkey 09-11-07, 05:39 AM I cured cancer today for free.
However, that doesn't count in our current society.
one_raven 09-11-07, 05:50 AM I cured cancer today for free.
No you didn't.
You did it for glory, recognition and bragging rights.

I did it to safe my terminally ill brother.
Yeah, well I made world peace possible. Then I decided it was too quiet without a war going on. Yes, I can manipulate humanity.
Orleander 09-11-07, 05:46 PM ...I just made $320. Today alone!!! :D...

Nice going, Raven. :) That's about where I was for the last two years before retirement - $1,920/week regular plus time-and half after 49 hours/week. (And that happened on a pretty regualr basis - 12-hour days were VERY common.)
I make over $50/hr every day doing not much more than I am doing right now - surfing the internet and watching Monty Python.
Really. How's that then?
If you tell me, I promise you a bigger part in the sciforums flatfoot novel.

The what?
I work for a large, international bank (shamefully enough) as a junior executive and computer nerd.
I basically found a niche and created a position for myself in which I could hide from the bean-counters and auditors.
I hate my job.
I hate the computer field.
I hate being so bored (I miss being challenged)
I hate the banking industry with a vile passion.
However, I get a very nice salary and an extra 10% differential for working nights.
I work from home.
My job is extraordinarily easy.
I can pay the bills and put my wife through school.
I keep telling myself it is temporary until I can put myself through school (for metal fabrication, body work, chassis fabrication and mechanics - it has long been my dream to buiold custom cars and motorcycles).

Hahahahha. Sheesh. I was being facetious.

What are you complaining about? I spend 12 hours a day, 6 days a week walking non-stop and I'm not guaranteed a dime. I have to actually perform in order to get paied. Yes, I'm doing well, but it takes a lot of work.
TruthSeeker 09-14-07, 01:56 AM Bet you didn't realize how profitable it was to be a gigolo. J/k :)
Darn! You figured it out! :D
Nice job....can I borrow $100?
You are joking, right? ;)
one_raven 09-14-07, 04:20 AM How?
I don't understand the question.
[QUOTE=TruthSeeker;1541308]What are you complaining about?
"I hate my job.

I hate the banking industry with a vile passion."
That's what I am complaining about.

I think that's why most people in the computer field attempt to generate more interesting lifestyles. Perhaps they rock climb, skateboard/snowboard, power glide or bungee (Wages permitting of course). I guess it makes excellent chances for decent pictures to liven the most boring of desktops up and of course makes you the toast of the party.
If you want to learn how to do cars, you don't need to go as far as College try something like volunteering for stock-cars or something similar, you'd have the chance to learn how to put a car together (and bang the panelling out when the car gets knocked), maybe you could even race ;).
Are happy because you made it today or because you know it is going to be like this for a long time?
MWHUAHUAHUA!!!!!!!

Gratz. Dibs on half.

Yes, but there are plenty of people who hate their jobs, and are not paid nearly as much as you. So count your blessings. My dad worked at US steel for thirty years and hated it the whole time. Now he's retired from there and drives a school bus, which he actually enjoys.
I'm lucky in that I like my job and make good money most days. On the down side, there's a lot of stress and I have no guaranteed salary. Oh, not to mention the fact that my son should be starting college next year and I still haven't paid off my student loans!
I'm busting my ass right now with three offices and working six days a week. I'm hoping to sock away some cash, pay off my debts, and put my kids thru school. Ultimately, I'd like one small office and work like two or three days a week.
PS It's funny that you work in a bank. I definitely wouldn't have guessed that.

You are merely frustrated with your political system where you are forced to work in a demeaning job instead of pursuing your happiness because the state has no intention to provide for equal education for all.
Of course you are in a way lucky that you earn more than a janitor, but that does not diminish of course your mental anguish at being stuck. Something people who point out you should be happy do not understand.
Obviously there are many people who have more 'serious' problems, and the same people who point out that cars kill more people than guns, will happily provide you with examples.
However, the core of your problem remains. The pursuit of happiness under your ideological regime is limited to certain pathways, which are constrained by economical parameters that limit the actions of citizens.

Not really, but I don't have to work to put my wife through the educational system.
It's for free.
I could quit my job and do something else, and have no effect on the academic freedom of the spouse.
one_raven 09-16-07, 11:02 PM I may have to actualy start doing some work now.
I just got offered a Vice President position.
I hope there is a raise involved.
At least work will be less dull now.
It actually looks like it might be a real challenge.
I'll be tearing down an old department and rebuilding it again from scratch with the guy who was one of the best bosses I ever had.
Plus it gives me more days off to take a welding class and other such things to get me on my way to my way out.
TruthSeeker 09-18-07, 10:17 PM HAHA! You got offered a Vice President position while you want your way out!
Looooooseeeeeerrrrrrrrr!!!! :p
Just kidding. :D
I can have that job if you don't want it...... ;)
TruthSeeker 09-18-07, 10:18 PM What the hell do you do anyways? Do you solve computer problems!? Is it programming that you do!?
one_raven 09-18-07, 10:59 PM Right now I do server building and maintenance.
The new position, if I take it, will be building and managing the department that responds to server error alerts and contacts the responsible parties to fix it (right now, I am one of those responsible parties).
This position is similar to my last position with this company, but it got boring, so I went back to tech work.
Now they have offered me the promotion to come back.
spuriousmonkey 09-19-07, 01:46 AM I made 189,000 Euro this week by working 2 weeks some months ago.
The only problem is that I am forced to spend it over a period of three years.
one_raven 09-19-07, 03:11 AM You got the grant?
Congratulations.
If I can help spend it some way, let me know.
Bet you didn't realize how profitable it was to be a gigolo. J/k :)
And I thought "MWHUAHUAHUA" was a mispelling for marijuana. Now I feel foolish for reporting him to the DEA.
CharonZ 09-19-07, 10:16 AM 189,000 ? One can't get a decent mass spec for that. ;P
GJ man

cosmictraveler 09-19-07, 10:43 AM Money cannot buy peace of mind.
Money only leads to wanting more and buying more things that keeps you always in debt trying to make more money to get out of that debt.

well, no. We already have 3 children. :(
cosmictraveler 09-19-07, 10:50 AM She can still give if she wants, having a child doesn't stop sex activities does it? I hope not for your sake.;)

That's not true on both accounts :). Money in the U.S. buys big quantities of freedom. Its a positive motivator to save and let me tell you, having a bank account full of freedom and no debt brings a nice peace of mind.
TruthSeeker 09-22-07, 10:34 PM I now have my own bookkeeping business and I earn around $250 a day working on my PJs.... :)
And I also have 2 other jobs which I do occasionally and get paied commission.... :)
Oh... ooops... I should be working right now...... :D

Just because one has no debts doesn't insure peace of mind.
spuriousmonkey 09-23-07, 07:55 AM Just imagine though. The way the dollar is going you will need to earn 10$ a day more every week.

You're still paying for the debts the country has incurred, every time the dollar falls or American Treasury bonds are unloaded in the market.
spuriousmonkey 09-23-07, 08:02 AM And remember all the reichsmarks that turned into nothing but toilet paper.
Crunchy Cat 09-23-07, 10:45 PM Just because one has no debts doesn't insure peace of mind.
True, but big accounts-o-fredom go a long way.

Good thing I invest wisely.
CharonZ 09-25-07, 04:33 AM it's just salary
Not bad for a salary in the academics, actually. I do get somewhat less (but at least am financed for two years again) :)
one_raven 10-09-07, 12:41 AM I got the promotion.
I think I will likely be around here less in the future, once I start the new position (Oct 16th or Nov 1st).
I didn't do a lick of work for four years and they gave me Vice President. Ain't Corporate America grand?
