"Fixing SciForums"

"Ban The Moderators"

"Replace The Moderators"

and so forth...

All those useless, worthless discussions over nothing. It cannot be "fixed" because it isn't broken, people! Regardless of all of those thousands of words spent on ideas and endless debate, it's going to remain exactly as it has always been. (Unless it shuts down, of course.)

Moderators will, at times, abuse their authority, people will still hijack threads and post nonsense, the crowd will still consist of intelligent people and idiots and every level in between, etc.,etc. Only the names will change over time but everything else will remain the same.

Get over it! :D

I agree and I've changed my user subtitle in order to encourage what's lacking in all this:

A sense of perspective.

That's my one and only contribution.

I know the spirit of that is to say "lighten up because the discussions are trivial" - but at the same time, I can tell you how to fix your car, or teach you a new recipe or make you aware of some sort of information you previously did not know. A person could play their cards right, and make new friends/allies/acquaintances. Yes, I know the complete opposite of these things can also happen (IE- the car advice I gave you could just be me talking out of my ass, or you could create new enemies), but "it's just the internet" seems like an underestimation.

A deliberate underestimation, yes.

Like I said: perspective, people.

I can't beleive Read Only posted this thread. And not even a single jab at the woo woos!
Well done! We'll fix you yet.

The problem that I see, for the most part, is lack of responsibility on the part of the user. For some reason, it seems to be the order of the day that sciforums be 'fixed'. By some authoritative commandment or policy or action from above.
The 'problem' can only be fixed from the ground up.
Moderators can't force you to be interesting or interested.
Can we?

Let me try:

Moderator Note:

Be interesting or be banned, people. I have spoken.

I've learned. :) After all, that was my only reason for coming here in the first place - to learn - and later, to inject a little information here and there, but mostly still to learn.

The problem that I see, for the most part, is lack of responsibility on the part of the user.

Actually, I'd disagree with that and say it's ENTIRELY the lack of responsibility of the users. Moderation can only accomplish so much. Cleaning up or deleting a post here and there, banning obnoxious users (who usually just return under a different name anyway) and the like. The moderators cannot FORCE anyone to be intelligent, stay on topic or prevent frivolous posts. A mob like this can never be controlled or held to any really meaningful standards - not entirely. With such a diversity of personalities and opinions (and generally little facts), you can pretty well expect anything and everything to show up here sooner or later. It's just a simple, unavoidable fact of life.

We thrive on soap though some of us are in denial; there's hope for you, looks like. :)

We had such fun the last time the forums was thrown into such a tizzy, when Dave sold the forums out from under us! :D

It was the contest that saved us that time:
