Hubble humbled by power failure (http://news.com.com/Hubble+humbled+by+power+failure/2100-11397_3-6154799.html)

The Hubble will still be able to function, but until a new camera is installed in 2008, the images will not be as far reaching.

...A previously planned service mission on the Hubble to install a completely new camera was already scheduled for September 2008. The new camera, currently called the Wide Field Camera 3, will replace the downed WFPC2 and prove more powerful than the ACS was in most ways...

At least there's a plan to keep the old bastige goin'.

I was just reading about this.
The ACS was just down this summer (http://www.sciforums.com/showthread.php?t=55864) with a malfunction but they managed to fire up the backup circuits and keep it going another 7 months or so.
It's outlived its design specifications, but still disappointing.

It would be nice to recover it in the shuttle and place it in a museum, but that's almost certainly not going to happen. Most likely, it's just going to burn up.

Don't the people in the back left of that pic look like cardboard people? Ah well.
