Just wanted to ask, how were you called at school?

For some weird reason the boys in our class called each other by surnames mostly.
The girls were called by name. A select few had nicknames derived from their names or surnames.

Were boys in your class calling each other by surnames too?

By first name. However, as the first name is widely open to interpretation as regards pronunciation, there were several versions of it :p

Yeah, I knew someone named Ishmael. He was called Isreal, Izzy, Izmeal, and anything else but his given name. His family called him Mael but at school he would answer to anything.

I was called a bunch of different names: Obay, Big O, Osiris, Big Turk, The Guru, etc.

Too many to name.

I was speaking of friends outside internet. I don't think you can be a friend with someone strictly just on the internet. Doesn't work that way for me, I need to know the person in person. Avatar is from Indian mythology.

Only my family calls me Sam, though they have other nicknames for me as well.

Everyone else knows me only by my real first name.

Vega is probably one of those weird folks who think that knowing a person's name gives them some strange power over that person.

I was called my first name. A lot of the boys called eachother by nicknames or their last names.

In university we call each other by names, in school we called each other by surnames.

In elementary school and at college - by first names.

In highschool mostly by surnames. This probably has to do with the teenage years and hormones and development of personality when it seems a bit awkward and perhaps too intimate to call eachother by first names.

I think, looking back if I had a nickname, it would be Ghost. One of the most popular guys in school was Shorty (which he was) but he never took offense.

i was awful, i mean awful, i was the most unrulley and undisicplined child ever, i would call my teachers names, and walk out of class and school when it fitted me to!

I was caught smoking when i was just 12 and i smashed the windows of the science room, and yes they did call me by my first name, i would however call my teachers what i wanted!

i would truant whenever i felt like it, i was always fighting, and i did a few things that i am still ashamed of, but i was just a kid, and kids do really nasty things!

I remember being suspended once for kicking someone, i was suspended for a week, and when i went back this girl said somthing to me again, so i lkicked her again!

But not like that now! (apart from looking after myself that is, if anyone still hits me i hit back)

i dont belive in karma!

yeah sure i was an asshole has a child, but i paid greatly for that in later life!

and your point with my kids, for the record they got picked on by kids who are screwed in the head, not once did i ever think about killing someone by throwing they're clothes on a train track while a train was coming!

YIKES!! You terror.... I can kinda of see why you drove your mom nuts!!

I was pretty much an angel at school. I never got in trouble. The school never had to talk to my parents about anything.

They called me by a shorter version of my name. My preference at the time.
It's funny because now I prefer my real name. I don't know what I was thinking at the time.

Girls normally called by first names, or a nickname derived from their first or last name. But hardly ever called by their last name.

Boys hardly ever called by there first names, either last names or nicknames derived from their first or last names.

Of course some had nicknames unrelated to their name.

Back in the 1950s, in elementary school we called each other by our given names. Not even nicknames, we were Victor and Susan, not Vic and Sue. In junior high (you call it "middle school" now), some of the boys who thought they were important started calling the boys by their surnames, but the girls still went by their given names. In high school that faded away and nicknames came into use: we became Vic and Sue. In my university in the 1960s most of the boys used surnames. (It was an all-boys school so I don't know what girls did.) Some guys earned very insulting nicknames and were always called by them. (I don't know if this happened in coed schools but in an all-boys school things can get really stoopid.)

Later on I went to a "commuter" university where the students were a little older and didn't live on campus, so we didn't know each other very well. The professors all called us "Mr." and "Miss" or "Mrs." (No "Ms." yet.) We were kind of awkward about it, since we never heard each other's given names. We didn't think it was appropriate to call each other Mr. and Miss, but in the anti-military culture of the 1960s nobody was going to address somebody by surname like he was a soldier, so we tended to avoid calling each other by name at all.
