My Internet Service provider just increased the rates for their services and it has now increased to US36$ per month (from 25$) for the basic cable modem service (which limits the upload bandwith to 20kB/s and the download bandwith to 400kB/s)

It really pisses me off because in the past, the connection was actually cheaper and the speeds were in the order of 800kB/s but because they have made an extreme speed service, they cut on our service...

I can't have ADSL over here because the telephone central is too far away (and the lines are noisy).

It's like the telephone company at first, all the little services like *69 (to know who's the one who called you) was costing 25¢ per shot canadian (about US18¢) and now it costs 95¢!!!!!!! what the @#%?@%?

How come the prices are more than doubling for a technology that's been used for 10 years!!! Don't tell me it's inflation, they are stealing our money!

how much does it cost you?? What are your speeds??

    I hate Monopoly or Oligo-Monopoly...

I remeber hearing about this a Long while back but was there or is there a free DSL service like Juno and Net Zero? There was suppose to be but the annoying banner adds but FUCK for free DSL I'll live with the banners. If anyone knows what I am talking about, post a link because I just remembered about it reading.

P.S. it was 45$ monthly in Nevada for Cable from Charter Comm when I used it. Now I just bitch at AOL every few months about bullshit and they somehow always get more free months

but AOL bites the BIGGEST EVER.

Get back to me on the free DSL if anyone knows about it or it happened...

NTL (our local cable co. Formerly 'Cable & Wireless', formerly 'Nynex'... merger-tastic!) cable modem: 600Kbit downstream, 128Kbit upstream. £24.99 per month.

£34.99 for 1Mbit/256Kbit is tempting, but not really worth it.

and on the subject of *69-like services, the UK equivalent -- 1471 to have the number read back to you, then hit 3 to call it) is free on the major telco's (BT, ntl and Telewest)

Umm, ntl have recently been mentioning something about a 'soft-limit', whereby exceeding 1.5GByte in any 3 out of 7 days may lead to some kind of temporary service cap.

It sounds like sabre-rattling. Even if it were to be enforced, it's still quite a generous limit, considering 600Kbit/sec gives real-world performance of about 76KByte/sec.

    (that's a lot of $$$ there, blunderbuss!)

    $55/month

    1.5mbit down - DSL
    ??? up
been downloading a bunch of files off IRC, filled up my harddrive...so I shall see if there is a cap.

recently upgraded from 512kb/256kb for $10/month...if we're already paying $45, why not walk a little more, save some gas money and put it into the internet bill :m:

    (US dollar)

    edit- few details added

In the US, I have Yahoo DSL, and I got a promotional rate -

    $30 month
    128kbit upload
    768kbit download
no known caps on total upload/download

Plus, I got all necessary hardware (line filters, DSL modem, etc) included & shipped for free with a 1 year committment to the $30/month rate. After the year is up, I own the hardware.

$45(CDN)/month for DSL 1.25mbit down/128k up, no limits. My previous DSL was same price, but all of a sudden, without notifying me, they put a cap, and charged alot extra to exceed it, and the cap was pretty small too. So One month I had like $175 in extra charges, and promptly switched providers.

4 Mbps / 320 Kbps C$39.95 a month (US$27). 40 GB cap which isn't enforced, but merely there for legal reasons (so they tell me). Cable.

See someone is having good experiences with technology. Sounds like you've got an internet connection that's suitable for a rock PC!

Why not go digital and get broadband? Must be cheaper than what you're already paying

    FUSHING CUTE!-)

Cable has always, in fine print, indicated they would boost the price and/or reduce the pass through as subscriber base demanded (i.e. when they sold enough of you they'd safely screw you!-)

Waiting for DSL; how much you want to bet when it is available (for me, way out in nowhere forest about another 3~4 months) Cable and Satellite will drop their price (and maybe lift their skirt?-)

    @ThePHNX:

Don't know what it's like where you are, but here (the UK), contention ratios are actually higher for xDSL than for Cable. Typically, consumer ADSL has a ratio of 50:1, whereas the cable companies offer 15:1 for home users.

Broadly speaking, DSL and Cable both have contention issues - so your beef with cable may well apply to DSL, too.

'Course, I could be completely talking out of my backside -- I guess it all depends on how telco's choose to structure their networks.
