Hi all i was just wondering how easy it would be to get a memeber of Sciforums email address from the database, ie how ez is it to hack. i am a little worried about this, in light of my latest google search!! This is real important Thank you for reading ~~~~~~~~~~~ Zak
Well, with password, they are stored in hashes, and when some one wants to crack a password hash, it takes a week or two of pure brute force hacking.... but, here, it would all depend on the level of security implemented for email security...
sign up with a provider that can give you more than one email address. i would be more worried about a d-dos attack than someone stealing my email address. a d-dos attack is where someone uses your computer remotely and without your knowledge to disable servers or to spam.
ive noticed that whenever i receive a report it gives me the registration address of the user who sent it. im sure that wouldnt be terribly hard to exploit
Oh Shit I dont want someone to crack Sciforums and obtain my email address. i am very worried about this. ~~~~~~~~~~ take it ez zak
don't worry about it too much zak. i'm registered on 5 different boards and nobody is spamming my inbox.
Hi Leo, Thank you for your response, and for helping subduing my worries. I am not really worrried about spammers, but something in relation to what i have been writting over the last few weeks, i have suddenly become a bit paranoid, espicially when my posts are on the first page of google!! ~~~~~~~~~ take it ez zak
What you could do is change your e-mail to something you don't really check anyway. Almost anything I am registered for online has my "spam" account. Very few places know my real e-mail address.
Zak Gmail is open for everyone now. Get a gmail account for signing up to forums or sites you don't trust. You can change your email address by visiting http://www.sciforums.com/profile.php?do=editpassword
thanks for the advice guys, i may do one of the above, as the email address i have for sciforums is my most official one. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ take it ez zak
Technically it might not take a week or two, it's dependent on how strong a method was used, Whether it's was digested or decryptable and how much hardware you have available and even if it's worth actually altering the software to do the decrypting rather than bruteforcing. Also in email addresses there are common denominators, for instance you've got @ and . in them somewhere and obviously the TLD's are a slowly increasing but yet finite list. As for Sciforums email addresses, currently the admin has removed them from being shown on Sciforums and even the form method of sending has been turned off to stop spam abuse. (Some scripters actually wrote methods of abusing forums form method to mass send spam.) For the most part email addresses are only really traceable should you tie your email to a website address which is added in a profile, or should you add it to a post or any other personal data which can be used to social engineer who you are and where you are.
