Its basically a dream of mine, to go onto an expedition somewhere and count penguins or something. Anything to get away from the mundane stupidity of humanity.

How does one get involved in such projects... so you contact someone like Discovery and try get a job there, or how does it work?

I'm willing to do anything, from looking for ancient bones in dirt to trying to decipher the language of the Lesser Spotted Reticulated Pygmy

What would be involved in setting up such an expedition, and how would you go about getting funding?

Has the sciforums ever thought of raising the money to do their own expedition?

We couldn't even raise the meager amount of money needed to keep the site with Porf. There's no way in hell we could fund an expedition to anywhere but our own desks.

Getting involved in an expedition, hmm. What qualifications do you have?

    Try this for the start:

    earthwatch.org/site/pp.asp?c=crLQK3PHLsF&b=470189

Sorry, I'm a newbie with below 20 posts, so I can't post direct links.

Or, you just type 'volunteer, expedition' or something like that in browser, and you'll find plenty of available expeditions all around the world.

Lots of volunteer work .Just remember if you're commited enough it will pay off. Donate your time, because that's how most of them get started.

Narrow down your interests into a specific field that you want to specialize in and then start researching whose involved in the work that you want to do in that particular field. Study as much as you can about it and start making contacts. Archaeology work - looking for ancient bones - is not as glamorous as you might think. It involves a lot of tedious, painstaking - to me, a bit boring - redundant work, but the final possible? discoveries are what pays off. If you're just out for adventure, you can always go on an expedition yourself or with friends or a group with mutual interests. Many organizations exist just for this purpose. What are you interested in, and have experience and knowledge in?

Why did I have to be born in a country with a terrible exchange rate :/ those volunteer positions are perfect... but unaffordable for me at the moment :/ aah well, something to save towards.
