They don't want to suffer the consequences of their actions? They don't want to disappoint the ppl around them if they have done something they are ashamed of?
You'd have to distinguish between selfish and altruistic lying. We lie altruistically to protect the feelings of those we care about. We lie selfishly because it brings us a survival advantage - eg we lie to job interviewers because a better-paid job will insulate us from poverty and the threat of starvation. I expect someday we'll find a gene for it.
Fear. Fear of being 'found out'. Speaking what others want to hear, rather than the truth, because you are afraid of their reactions.
People lie for many reasons. It depends on what they are lying about! It also depends on if the lier is male or female. Men tend to lie to avoid conflict. Women tend to lie to spare peoples feelings.
They lie because they don't want to get into trouble or they lie due to low self esteem. I wonder why they do the things they do where they need to lie or how they can eventually believe their own lies.
very true. My first husband lied about everything. "what did you have for lunch?" "egg salad" when in fact he had bologna. Why lie about that????
To conceal their true intentions. There's nothing necessarily wrong with it, it's a skill we cannot live without.
Because sometimes they don't want people to know the truth for it may hurt them or destroy them and their image of whoever lied. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Some ppl lie to pretend they are more important then they really are, in hopes ppl will like them better.
Why do all intelligent species lie? Why do apes and monkeys deliberately ignore food when there are competitors around, then return to retrieve it later? Why do other monkeys hide behind trees and watch them? Why do birds mimic other birds? Why do cuckoos lay eggs in other birds nests? Why do many species employ some form of camouflage? Answer those questions and you're some way towards answering why we do it too.
Fear of losing respect. To get what you want. To protect someone else. Because you got used to it. I think that pretty much sums it up.
