Its not called mating where I come from

As soon as people become sexually mature, then they are ready to 'mate'. I can't see why boys or girls in their early teens wouldn't want to have sex with others of or near their age, moral conditioning not withstanding.

People in their mid to late teens would probably prefer to get it on with people that are slightly older than themselves and people that are much older, probably drool at the idea of going with somebody much younger.

Most ancient cultures and many present day ones accept/ed that girls were/are old enough to marry and 'mate' from as young as 12-13.

I can tell you are all kids. The answer depends on your age.

There is a powerful social taboo against having sex with someone young enough to be your child. It probably comes from the instinct, in a highly social species with a very complex culture, to always treat the next generation in a parental way, because we feel that we always have some wisdom to impart that comes from having been alive longer. It's a huge internal conflict to think of yourself as someone's elder at the same time you're thinking of yourself as a potential sex partner.

For that reason, many people have a natural reluctance to dally with someone more than twenty years younger. It's not everybody, by a long shot. It's also not written on a stone tablet so it might be 15 years or it might be 25 years, and occasionally someone might come along who is so enchanting that we forget ourselves.

Of course this begs the question of why the person at the other end of the age difference would even be interested in the first place.

Mate implies reproduce.

Reproduction strategies vary, but the overall goal is the same– have as many of your genes as possible survive, which means your offspring must survive to reproducing age and reproduce. Note that this doesn't necessarily translate into many offspring from an individual.

For a woman to ensure that her offspring will reach reproduction age, it would be beneficial for her to marry an older, more established man in the community who would have a great deal more resources (financial, social, etc) to raise children.

if i was older i would feel uneasy about sleeping with anyone below the age of 18, however seen as im only 16 now im not too bothered

I'm 21... I see nothing wrong with dating a 16 year old. In fact, I think it's society that tells us it may be wrong.

in the usa.. she must be atleast 16 in some states... 18 in others...
