Well, at the moment Im at Astronomy Camp in Tucson Arizona. However, we have been inhibitied from traveling up to Mt. Lemmon by a massive forest fire. Our food, and most of everything else is up there. So, interestingly, the next week is going to be taken day by day.

Hopefully the 60" and 40" and the two or three other scopes up there wont be destroyed.

    Later,

i've been told that controlled burns are beneficial. but didn't the good mother do just fine before we came along and so arrogantly decided we need to help her out?

We with our fear of fire we have controlled the natural occurring fires so that they burn out quickly. Because of the parts of the forest continue to collect debris and thicker undergrowths. Thus with high winds and heat the fire can burn much fiercer and do a lot more damage.

Controlled burning is very important and will keep the fuel loads down. Also natural fires in unpopulated areas should be left to them selves.

Every winter the local authorities do there burn offs. Most of the time nobody cares, but every now and then they will get the weather predictions wrong, and so every winter when the smoke blows in from the hills and get trapped under the inversion layer over the costal plain, we hear the cry of the environmentalist trying to stop the burn off.

Strangely places where many fires occur, have plant life that evolved to be highly flammable. In these environments it is a must to burn of excess fuel every few years, The intense fires from heavy fuel loads can kill even the most fire hardy of trees.

    UPDATE:

Mt. Lemmon's Forest fire is the Nation's Number One Forest Fire with over 800 firefighters trying to extinguish the flames.

So far the telescopes atop the summit have not burnt down and neither has the 61" on Mt. Bigelow.

    Cross the fingers!

The flames rise higher and higher, but Tristan the Intrepid keeps on posting...
