I guess I came a little too late and the post died, but anyways, anyone heard from those poor schmucks that were talking about how great Ayn Rand was? His post was titled: "Please Heed My Advice And Save Yourselves"

It's mostly hilarious, except for the childish parts of name calling between a couple of the posters.

Some of them are still about, head up to the "world" section, politics and world events and economics to find them.
I myself have had a run in with one or two before, but all i know about rand is a couple of short bits on one of her associations websites, and thats not enough to have a proper argument with people about their philosophy, even though I disagree with it. Or maybe its the people who believe it. I personally think the person comes first, then they make up/ find a philosophy that justifies them being themselves.

    Ayn Rand was great.
She is not above being human to the point of being an idol of anykind however.
What she was talking about however is awesome.
Sure, what would you like to talk about?

Objectivists are obscene. They proudly call themselves egotists, when what they are is egomaniacs and megalomaniacs. The proof is in the pudding, one Objectivist can rarely agree to the "Objective" reality stated by another, and they all hold such stupid opinions that their recruiting literature demands that they must hold as the objective truth... but they are almost always at odds with one another! The only way that they can stay as a cohesive group is to 1. Not interact with one another, or 2. Be controlled through a strong cult of personality which can pound out such differences in their "Objective" behavior and opinions. That’s why the movement has failed to gain any steam since Ayn Rand died. "Objectively" speaking, she was the smartest greatest woman who ever lived (Because she said so loudly) and could be the arbiter of what is objective truth and what was not. Which quite often amounted to her own subjective (or even psychopathilogical) opinions on varying topics.

I wonder what she thought of homosexuality. Just my own idle speculation there.

Anyway, that all said, I still think I'm closer to her opinions on Eastern (and western) religions than I am to those of the practitioners of them.

    Hey Spymoose!
    Wassup!
I myself would not call myself an "Objectivist" persae, but the methods for perceiving and gaining control of my mental falculty for progressing in my lifes acheivements are much appreciated.
I see many correlations between easten philosophy and objectivist thought though.
Mainly to do with the neccessity of focus.
    Conscious focus.
By eastern I am meaning Zen speciffically.
I have practiced Zen and Taoism, and I particularly think it has balanced my character quite nicely without trying to blow my own horn.
However, I do have some difficulties with any religion that requires you to negate the existance of self in a western society.
That will get you on a street corner begging for money pretty fast if taken to seriously, and kills any hope of attaining any practical amount of self esteem.
I can only speak for what I beleive has worked for me.
I in no way want to try and convince anyone that my particular way of thinking is best.
It is what I have become through my own distinctive experience through my life thus far.
I have had a very broad range of experience, it doesn't get to much more broad than a Toaist to an objectivist point of view, both have had there merrit and I have gained value from both.

From what I have learned about objectivist thought about homosexualty, is that as long as it does not forcibly interfere with another, it is O.K.
    Both people must be consenting.

Life teaches us the lessons we need at that particular moment, if you are not open to learning, you will continue to face the same level of problems.
I beleive there is a higher inteligence, yet I also beleive in the importance of attaining as high a level of independant thought as possible.
I beleive this intelligence will supply the nuts, but he won't crack them for us.
    Just a thought.

Are you implying that Ayn Rand was being Ironic by strictly controling a cult of personality? That sounds like a pretty silly thing to do, and I do believe Ayn Rand spoke out against the act of laughter in both the Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged.

If you meant you thought that my tyrade was ironic, then I'm sure that you, as an objectivist, couldn't possibly expect me, as a rational human being, to appologise or try to qualify my statements.

    No.

I don't recall that being the case, although its been awhile since I carried a copy of Atlas Shrugged in my back pocket - lemme look it over.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. And, as I've pointed out already, its been awhile since I moved to the beat of Rands drum - forgive me.

    Nonetheless, there was irony there.
