Help with I-tunes

my friend recently got an ipod and i was trying to help her import music from her computer into itunes so we could put it onto her ipod but everytime i tried to import them nothing happended, so why do you think its happening. All the files are said to be Windows media files by the way could that be the problem? thanks for you help
