I am looking to get a camera set up. It needs to be HD. It needs to be easy to switch on and off (or on all the time if I can get good enough capacity with HD). I am thinking about media storage hard disk but I am not sure how I would go about it.

I don't want a camcorder type, more a fixed security/cctv style camera or webcam (with good resolution). And I would want to record as needed and store it on HDD, preferably without using a computer.

Does anyone have any expertise in this area?

Why does it need to be HD? You wont get a real HD camera becasue the cheap cams are not HD, thet are HDV. Better off going with SD and firewire out to HDD.

Edit- well actually depends on the codec.

Right, so you want an HD cctv,... you'll need a camera, and a recording device, and have to wire the two, unless you opt for a more expensive wireless system. So you are talking about £100 for the camera, and about twice that for the recorder, with 500Gb storage.

You haven't specified what HD resolution you want though, 420, 720, or 1020,... costs and storage capacity depend on this.

Hey guys. thanks for taking the time. Right. I have found this:
    http://www.securitycamerasuk.co.uk/hd-security-cameras/hd-high-definition-mega-pixel-ip-box-camera.html‏

And finding the storage device doesn't seem too tricky, but it would need to be the correct thing for my purpose ie can work without pc. Though I suppose it would be good to stream back to a pc for reviewing recordings, or could I just hook up a small tv/monitor directly to the HDD?

It is for a warehouse packing room application. It needs to resolve codes on boxes as they are being packed. This is for traceability. If a mispack is claimed by a customer then we can go back and review the order as it was packed to see if they were lying or not. I envisage the camera being at head height pointing down on the packing table. The packer 'shows' the code on the box to the camera before he/she packs it. The codes will be of differing font sizes but shouldn't be any that are that small. I need to have this running all 8 hours or just while packing is going on (differs depending on busy-ness) and need to store minimum of a couple of months or so at a time.

    Any ideas?
